@Dazza
fair enough man, that makes sense though, never thought of it like that ill just pick up some good quality oil in the next couple weeks. its an old motor so im not expecting big things from it, just want it to sound decent and get some good airflow going through it. thanks, Anthony |

Do the basics, plugs, leads, cap, rotor button, trans service, good engine oil, then get the stanley knife and sand paper out and cut the bellmouth out of the flexi tube from the airbox to the throttle body (assuming MPEFI) and sand it smooth and curved, you basically open the diameter right out to let more air in.
My motor has done 370000ks. It still runs fine. |

the 3.9's are noisy, rattly and slower. it's like 10kw difference out of the box

Get a search going on ebay for ea-el parts withing 200kays... you will be amazed at the bargains that you will pick up.... have patience..... It is amazing what you can achieve on a limited budget if you are prepared to give things a go.... And to drive that point home... here is my previous car..... what I started with.... After 2 years, bargains galore.... Total cost $4000 and that includes buying the car...... All the work done by myself.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzMVCfoY0SI picture video I did That speaks for all man. It's what I wanna do to mine eventually....No, not turn it into an AU, Haha. I got my exhaust piping for free in parts I got from the wreckers scrap bin, one cos of a blown muffler an another with a bent gearbox mount area. Welded it myelf and got the extractors for $100 of an EF. As mentioned new ignition parts or even a good clean up if the cap and rotor don't look too old. A service and filter kit for the auto too can make a difference.

I have used Redback exhausts on both my E Series cars, and have found them to be cost effective and they sound good.
I also have Pacemaker extractors, which I picked up second hand. Cheers BenJ

sounds good man, how much did they cost you all up for the ehaust and extractors? and also is there a wierd drowning noise in the cabin when your driving at a consistant speed? |

New the Redback exhaust was around $330. I sourced it through a Local Exhaust place.
The extractors I picked up via Ebay for around the $230 mark, and they came with a highflow cat convertor already modded to bolt up to the exhaust. As for droning, I recommend getting a rear resonator. This will make the exhaust just audible while idling and cruising with the windows down, and when you give the engine a rev, is more than loud enough. Cheers BenJ

Don't go bigger than 2.5in. But see if you can find some scrap pieces at a wreckers or somthingthey are throwing out or somthing and get pieces cheap. Or keep an ear out, somone may have crashes their XR6 or somthing, even the XR stock exhaust is nicer a bit. Or if you want go to an exhaust place and get a quote on a 2.5 tailpipe with no muffler, you may be surprised,
Patience and hunting skills are a must.

My AU I had yrs ago had about 600 spent on a catback, I forget the brand but it was awesome, I thought it was a 2 1/2 but was talking to my brother (who now has the car) and he says its a 2 3/4. Sounded great. Because the car was lowered I couldnt get the back part of the system over the diff without putting it on the hoist so I drove it the 20 ks into town with just the front section with the 1 straight thru muffler... That was fun. |
