Hi All
Today I was just doing some routine maintenance on the EB, checking oil, tranny fluid etc, and while running the engine I notice the Harmonic Balancer had a slight wobble in it. I am only talking about a couple of millimetres but a wobble is a wobble. Is this an indication that it is buggered, or on its way out, or is it ok. The engine feels the same as it always did, even when I rev it out in first. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards BenJ

replace it.

If I end up having to replace the harmonic balancer, and already having an XG tensioner, I would probably look at doing a serpentine belt conversion.
Can I use the EB aircon comp with the serp setup, or are the pulleys different. BenJ

Ben,
I am fairly sure the EB aircon belt is a 5PK [5 grooves] profile and the serp belt is a wider 6PK profile. Paul

Hey Paul
I have been advised on the 'Other Forum' that I can use the EB Aircon compressor, as this is what one member is doing currently with his Serp conversion. I may acquire a belt and try it on for size. Ben

Ben,
I should be able to check in daylight, as I have a spare EB aircon compressor, belt and EF alt pulley. I'll measure them and post it up early tomorrow. I have read that you could use it but after seeing the part numbers, if my memory is correct re. 6PK, the serp. should be wider. I just read 'that' thread and if you revisit this thread you threw my way it would be of use to you now, especially what he did with the pwr steering pump. http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread ... ge=1&pp=25 The serp conversion doc thats referred to is by 'rollin' and EA2BA is probably using the standard serp belt or he would have said otherwise, I think. You would of course need the brackets etc. for the ps pump and alternator included in your parts list. Mac

It might cheaper and easier to buy an EF engine with all the bits attached.
Or I do know of a low Kay EB mont engine that might be available soon. BenJ

Ben,
For you a special price and I'll deliver it or help you change them over at my place. I get to keep the 'mont's gearbox and climate control though! Seriously. Mac

Ben,
The serp belt is a 6PK and the EB compressor is a 5PK, at least the pulleys I have are that. One could probably use a 5PK of the appropriate length as a serp belt or use the 6PK around the EB compressor but it would not be a perfect fit. The 6PK would either be deformed a little or ride a little high in the aircon pulley. EA2BA would know how much deformation and wear is taking place and he seems to think it's negligible but I'm only assuming that. PM him to confirm his belt and fit? Mac

hi guys
you will also find that the ea/eb compressor sits about 1/2 inch further back compared to ef. so the belt and aircon pulley dont line up. i was going to do the same thing untill i put the ef harmonic balancer on and there was no way it would line up with the pulley on the compressor. ive been told by many people that i can use a xh belt and tensioner. but if my ea air con pump sits 1/2 inch further back than ef it means no mater what i do the aircon compressor wont line up with the ef alt, power stear pump and water pump. ive been to ford and asked if there was a different mounting bracket for the xh aircon compressor and they say its a ea part number(same as ea) unless im missing something??? so once i can walk again (broken ankle) im going to do the whole serpentine belt conversion using all ef acessories. |

once it starts to wobble.. thats it... its not going to fix itself.. will only get worse... mine was so bad it was chopping through new belts every 20 km driving....

Troyman,
Sorry to hear about your broken ankle, hope it heals well. EA2BA on AFF told Ben he was using an EB compressor with a serp setup, how he overcame the differences is then the question I hope Ben is asking him. I agree that once its got the wobbles, it's a goner. Paul

jjohno,
Hire, buy or borrow an harmonic balance puller, you can make one but first you'd need to know what it looks like. Once you get one it is pretty self explanatory how it works. Paul
