Hey guys been a while since i was last on, after trying to start my car the other day, it refused to start for a while i left the key in the off position for about a minuite or so, then tryed again, it worked frst time, yeserday i started the car and it struggled a bit so i thought mabe it was the battery, i stoped at a friends house turned my car off and tred starting it again and it refused to crank over. We tryed jump starting it, nothing, changing the battery thinking the car we were jumping from didnt have enough juice behind it to crank my car over, still nothing, i hear the fuel pump turn on for a second when turning the key then when i turn the key to start the break fail light comes on and the starter doesnt even attempt to crank over, im guessing this could be one of a few things, faulty inhibitor switch?, faulty starter? or somthing else that i havnt thought of yet, oh yes i have checked all the fuses they are fine, it wouldnt be a relay would it?
All help appreciated guys thanks. -nick

I had exactly the same problem with my EBII.
Intermittent refusal to even turn over, dead key, only dash lights right..?? My case turned out to be the main power wire from the ignition barrel, about half way down the steering column, joining a brown plastic plug. Power wire had burnt out, creating a dodgy connection. (The NRMA guy sussed this out when he came to start my car. He did it by holding the connection together while I turned the key, and vvvoilla she starts) Fixed by an auto electrician for $20. Car starts every time since the fix. Always best to check the cheapest parts first....!!!!! Last edited by EB92 on Tue Dec 05, 2006 9:47 am, edited 1 time in total. |

Check relays near battery and connection on that small red wire to solanoid on starter motor..On a V8 it can be heat soak from exhaust...

I have this problem at the moment too, it will be interesting to see what people say, I posted a thread a while back and it was suggested that the inhibitor switch could be the problem, might have to check this brown wire stuff out.

Another possibility....
(After my previous reserach of posts here at Fordmods) It could be the smart lock module being a bit dodgy. (I think the fuel pump will not prime (ie whirr) at pre-ignition if the smartlock is stuffed, but Im not sure) As the module is located just above the handbrake (left knee), a bit of a thump here while the key is turned on may be get the car to start. Thus is was suggested that taking the module out and either cleaning or repairing any corroded contacts could be a solution. |

my old man had a similar problem on his EB II work car. Same intermitent starting problems. Turned out to be the Body Control Module. The mechanic took it apart and it was full of corrosion. The a/c must have been dripping condensation on it over the last 15 years.
Anyway they got anouther black box from the wreckers for $50 and hasn't missed a beat for about 1 month now. cheers..........

when my car was doing it it was the smartlock module which had a hairline crack in one of the tracks.

Had this same problem im my Celica paddock basher. Started to backfire severly and after i turned it of it never fired up again. That break failure light was flashing when i attempted to turn it over. It turns out all these wires leading to the coil had melted and now if you turn the ignition on this electronic thingy housed on the same bracket as the coil heats up and starts to smoke - massive electrical short in there somewhere....

yeh starters for falcon 6's are cheap. i had an ea today that wouldn't crank over until you jump started it, even with a brand new battery in it.
the battery terminal looked to be in good condition but that was the problem.
