well what are racing for? catergory? is it a drag car or a track car?
basically you want power high in the rev range and a manual box! soem racing catergorys have set engine specs u have to build to

Try Weight reduction. Check your class rules but you can remove alot of the sound deadening. Chuck the stereo/lower half of the dash, rear seats, roof panel etc. Perhaps if you get more serious put in a roll cage - do it properly and it will stiffen the chassis too.
Manual for sure and a good clutch. You should consider aftermarket management after a few mods. Brakes? tyres? Adjustable swaybars should be worth their weight in gold. The 4 litre doesn't really want to rev so think about your driving style. Try to aim for a good mid-high range torque. You should be making good power from about 2600 - 5500. I am assuming this car is a race car only, just drive it to the track not an everyday car.

If you’re going to stick with the auto then at least put a shift kit through it. DBA are good but if you’re using it as a race car take it to someone and get your callipers reconditioned, since they are an older car and the last thing you want is problems with the brakes. Safety should be top of your list. Still manual conversion is well worth it, and as everyone’s said 'CAM', get the ECU reprogrammed (especially the throttle mapping, those damn things are like on/off switches) you'll probably want a little more control, and as EFFalcon said; upgrade your sway bars. Weight reduction works well for them too, the i6 sure as hell notices additional or less weight. The stock EB head flowed rather well, but you can always get a light port and polish. The labour on that would be around $300 - $400 (not including removal and fitting) and you can get the exhaust valves upgraded at the same time to 41mm Tickford valves for usually around $130. Take about 30 to 40 thou off the head (shouldn’t cost more than $80), cant go much more than that due to it being an overhead cam. Offcourse removal and fitting is probably going to cost between $500 to $1000 depending on who does it. Umm, oh ye, get rid of the clutch fan! Pickup a set of AU thermos, or EL, or EF, any will do, and set them up instead. Well worth it there too, engine reves a hell of allot more freely. But again check out your class, you may not even be able to do half of what’s being suggested.
