Unfortunately my falcon has decided to let go on the rear main, I get maybe 3 drops after a 5 10 km drive. cheapest qoate so far has been 460$ I have some mechanical ability, plenty of enthusiasm and plenty of time. Is it easy enough to get a gregory's or some service manual and tackle it myself? Really in need of some advice as I'm pooring every last dollar I have into getting this ol girl on the road...

Pretty darn easy. Get yourself a workshop manual and you're laughing.
Basically, drop transmission, remove clutch and flywheel (if manual, flex plate if auto), lever old seal out, lube up new one and install. If your car is manual trans it will be easier than the auto. Hardest part would be undoing the top bell housing bolts. Cheers, Evan.

You can get the top bolts from above with the usual open Ender 19mm spanner.
Just make sure it's not the back of you're rocker cover leakin. |

plenty of enthusiasm?
bit of mechanical knowledge? easy done, even for the top bell housing bolts just drop the geabox cross member so the motor hangs down and use a couple long extensions with the 1/2" and easy work. hardest part is the starter motor.

That's probably about the cheapest you'll find.
But if you've got decent axle stands and some tools you could knock it over in a day with a carton. Just make sure you buy the seal and core plug before you start. |

At this stage I've just replaced the trans pan seal, used about 6 cans of degreaser, cleaned up the gearbox, bell housing and anything else you can poke a stick at under there, at this stage I'm hoping its the tappet cover seal, if so I've heard they always leak, will have a dig around here see if I can find the ultimate solution.
Also maybe fitting a new exhaust, cat back 2 1/2 straight pipe. Any advice there aswell is much appreciated.. |
