The tickford head that I got has 92DT XXXXX AA or whatever. And the block it came off had 91DA XXXX AA on it. Are all eseries bottom ends the same and have that part no.? Is it an EB block? Because I was informed this engine had already been out at one stage. This being a replacement motor for an EBII xr6

also.. what mods to the head can be done without tuning? in other words, near borderline to having to do a tune?

You can do a fair bit without requiring a custom tune. I'd get the head checked out first to make sure all is good, so pressure/crack test, get it surface machined to ensure it's completely flat and bump up the compression a tad. Then get a basic reco done on the head i.e, new valve stem seals, new or re-lined valve guides, get a multi angle valve cut done, etc. You could get a little bit of port work done while the head is off, get the ports cleaned up, bit of work on widening and flattening the short turns, blending valve seats into the throats, and get the exhaust ports and combustion chamber polished. The Tickford heads from what i have seen already seem to have a bit of port work done on them compared to the standard heads but there is always room for improvement, so getting something like the above mentioned work done should have the head sorted out nicely. |

sams_missen1604 wrote: what are the rough dollar figures of this when i get this kind of work done? I'd say allow between $350-$500 for just the machining work, valve and seat cutting, pressure/crack testing, and getting the guides and seals done NOT including any porting. That's about the usual price over here in NZ with most places I've spoken to about getting this kind of work done. Porting usually costs quite a bit on it's own. I wouldn't know what the rough prices would be as i have never had a head ported by a cylinder head shop before. I had a cylinder head specialist place quote me around $900+ to reco an EF head and have a mild port job carried out. Not too sure about what was included in the 'mild port job' as i didn't have a clue about it back then, but I'm guessing it would be a quick clean up with a little bit of blending, shaping and polishing. I decided to do a bit of research and had a crack at porting my cyl head myself to save on the costs and gain a bit of practical knowledge in the process. I found out pretty early why it costs so much to have porting done lol.. |

I'm guessing very time consuming! burr grinding does take time, being a Boilermaker apprentice and all. i must visit some of the engine builders around my area. get some quotes. Did you end up with an aftermarket cam?

Did you end up with an aftermarket cam? Yeah, I just had a mild grind put on my cam to suit my current setup and to give it a bit more midrange kick. Will be going for a more aggressive cam once i fit the ported head though for sure |
