Hi guys I have a eb xr6 it has a 2 1/2" exhaust, ea intake pipe and a reco tickford head less than 2000kms old, but it seems to be lacking some power (4cyl lancers quicker) and fuel usage is insane, it doesn't seem to be blowing any black smoke so I'm assuming it's not running rich, I've replaced the map sensor and oxy sensor and didn't make a difference. The head was recently replaced and was a back yard job so I'm sort of leaning towards timing? Any tutorials or help on fixing this would be much appreciated

Edit; PCV valve On rocker cover dodgy, does the map sensor pipe go from the "Christmas tree" on the back of the manifold tO the sensor? As mine goes some were under the manifold and my heater vac goes on the Christmas tree along with brake booster and fuel Pressure regulator

i would give it a compression test, you mentioned in another thread there was oil coming out of your throttle body... not a good sign....

Id be looking at cam timing and a colapsed cat

Yea a slight amount it's sort of stopped, I'm assuming it's the PCV valve as its rattling inside and idles a lot smoother with it blocked, I went for a drive with it blocked and it Wanted to stall all the time. Went for a drive with no 02 sensor, a little bit more power just coughed a little, swapped it out for a spare 1 and didn't change at all, took hose of map sensor, car stalled but I only recently replaced it, sussed If the cat was blocked but it didn't rattle (sounded hollow). Cat was heating up pretty quick after a cold start, 1 Injector ticks very bad, took each plug of while idling all made it run s**t, but ticking never stopped. Might take cat off and see if it's blocked, if it's hollow I'll replace it and also check my muffler |

Also put a pod on it to see if it ran any better, no real noticeable difference, just a very odd induction noise under acceleration

Cats heat up if blocked.

Must be blocked then, but if I belt the cat it makes no noise at all? No rattles, best way is to take
It out. Could the cat be hollow and all the crap be blocking the muffler? |

Check for any vacuum leaks...since the head was done in the backyard, were the inlet/exhaust manifold gaskets replaced with new ones? Get some carby cleaner or something and spray around the inlet manifold side, if the idle jumps when you spray some carby cleaner, there is definitely a leak.
By you saying: Quote: Went for a drive with no 02 sensor, a little bit more power just coughed a little, did you mean to say that you took the O2 physically off or just un-plugged it from the wiring? If it was the former, there is a possible blockage in your exhaust system, since most of the exhaust would have flowed out the O2 sensor hole. A blocked cat can cause higher fuel consumption because your car is not running at its full power potential, meaning you are pushing the pedal down further to do the same amount of work if it weren't blocked. Same with vacuum leak...to counter the loss of power, you put the pedal down. You can also check timing...my car ran like a dog with a slightly bad timing with the addition of a vacuum leak on the inlet side.

Well went for a hour drive gave it a little
Hell on the way home but the cat didn't glow at all, I noticed at the very back of the head is leaking a little oil, so I'm going to comp test it |

If the timing is extremely retarded it will run like crap and chew fuel...

Might sound a bit stupid but are the spark plugs ok? I know on my ba my fuel econmoy got to about 18l/100km and the power dropped massively so i checked the plugs and number 2, 4 and 6 were all completely stuffed changed the lot and now im gettin bout 12l/100km and it runs alot nicer

might be worth re doing your base ignition timing i had a massive flat spot under 3 grand re timmed and it was running much better and fuel wasnt getting hammerd
