would there be any benifit in upgrading to a non-smartlock EB2 ECU on a 4 speed multi point 3.9?

EDs have smartlock, meaning you need the smartlock module, barrel, etc, etc..

And to answer your question, you will achieve almost nothing from it... you might aswell just reset your current ecu.
