My brother just called me, he's driving my old EB2 in 40degree weather with aircon on and it just overheated on him (sitting right on the top of "normal"). Fan is operating and coolant bottle is full. Just had a new water pump.
I drove the car as a daily for 3 years and I know the car used to always run abit warmer in this sort of weather with the aircon on (maybe sitting at the "M" on NORMAL, but never got this hot). Is there a common place where leaves and s**t get caught up restricting air flow? where should I start looking? I should mention, the car will NEVER overheat as long as u keep the air con off, but that doesn't help much on days like today.

check in between the radiator and aircon condensor, as leaves and crap build up in this area..

Yeah my car for the first time in years has hit the N of NORMAL with air con on in stop start traffic (was in traffic for an hour and a half though). Once moving it went back to MA part of NORMAL.
Car will run pretty hot especially if there is no wind or you're tail gating someone. Always good to leave a bus length between you and the car ahead if possible. Should modify the air con so that it also blows over part of the radiator.

your thinking of EF/L phongus. EA-ED N or normal is cold and L is up there
as stated check between the condenser and radiator for leaves. if dirty remove the radiator and clean out. whats the condition of the coolant? nice and green or nasty looking Falcon radiators are good for clogging internally too. may be time for a flush

thats why its good to use ef thermo fans on eb/ed's..
my ed does not even get near the 1/2 way mark in this weather and with the fans wired to come on when the aircon compressor is on, it runs even cooler... |

As Troyman said check between the radiator and the condenser, to do this effectively you'll need to remove the radiator. While its out take it to a radiator specialist and get it cleaned out EA-EB had a bad habit of blocking the radiator core causing it to be less efficient. Car then runs ok in cooler weather and overheats in Summer.

Id deff. do a coolant change and new thermostat.
It weather that hot I wouldn't risk the ac. Id just take the pain haha. 4 windows and some cola. |

Thanks for the tips. I'll have a look behind the radiator.
I have never touched the radiator in 5 years of ownership, however coolant has always been flushed and changed every 12-18 months, most recently about 3 months ago when the water pump was changed.

5 years. Id be getting a new radiator. The end tanks are plastic.

Thing is the early E series had lots of problems with the radiator core clogging up. My EA had its tanks removed and cleaned once and a replacement radiator a few years later. All because the core would clog up with crap. The tanks themselves never failed

see if one of the hoses are not sucking in test is by rev car about 2grand and see if one of the hoses isnt sucking in thius can cause over heating problems as well

If the tank is brittle how is it you can flex them?  When I said age isn't a problem I wasn't referring to lack of maintenance, and your making a lot of assumptions that the car hasn't been looked after. The problem isn't age, or the tanks its the core. And plastic tanks have been around for a long time, on many models from most manufacturers.

The cooling system has been well maintained. As I said the water pump was replced at first sign of a leak and the coolant has been changed every 12 months since I've owned it (and having known the previous owner, I would expect the same).
Regardless, thanks again for the help and I'll check it out on the weekend.

And guess what. My radiator cracked halfway down the side tank. |
