So I've got this EBII, I love it. But it's starting to cost me a fair bit of cash. I don't mind too much as it's got 300k's on it so not suprised.
after punishing it at high speeds I think she's done a headgasket. Uses up 2L of water ever few days and is burning it out the exhaust and running roughly at idle. 1. I've done a few 4cyl Ford headgaskets, these would be just as straight foward wouldn't it? My mechanic reackons it's a 8hr job for them and probably $600-700 (NZ) This seems pricy when I could do it myself. 2. I have read the stickys about using the AU steel shim gasket and AU torque settings. Do I have to buy new AU headbolts as well?? 3. Does anyone actually have these AU torque settings? Any help appreciated. |

The torque settings will be provided with the gasket.
Yep you should use new head bolts (Ford manual says they can be reused once but its still advisable to replace them). All the SOHC head bolts are the same now - the e-series ones were discontinued a while back.

if youve done them on other cars you should be able to do it on an i6, just dont stuff u the vacume lines, that just causes HEAPS of headaches |

man.. an AU gasket is NZ$380.. and a set of AU headbolts is $350..
would it be worth it on an engine thats done 300,000kms?? almost cheaper to drop a second hand AU engine in it. Does anyone know if the EB intake manifold will bolt to an AU head? cos I use gas so I'll need it.. |

AU head gasket is $82 from ford, head bolts are $40 a set on ebay.

well thats what Ford here quoted me
but I think doing a head gasket on a 300+K engine is probably a waste of time. I think it would be a better option to transplant in something fresh.. would an EF engine be the simplest upgrade? or should I just put another EB motor in.. let me re-phase that, is there any advantage in using a EF or EL engine if I have to keep the EB intake manifold or is that extra 10kw all in the variable intake on the EF/EL ? |

Is there any advantage in putting an AU engine in my EBII rather than another EB motor? Taking into account I will have to run the EB manifolds.
It's done over 300kms so I don't see the point in doing a gasket. The engine is going to have to come out and I'm trying to decide whether to rebuild it... buy another one.. or put in an EF or AU engine. advice appreciated!!! |

Go with the au motor I had the same problems with the head gasket and I spent a little more getting the au motor fitted and it is like chalk and cheese it cost me $1050 for an au motor fitted with 71'000k's on it and that was with a warranty if you can do it yourself you will save an easy $600 as my motor was only $440 might be a little more in NZ but it is worth it.

so an AU engine will fit straight in after I grind down the alloy sump rib?
can it run on my EB computer and the EB intake manifold will bolt up? what about the wiring..? It doesn't really seem worth the hassle for an extra 9kw.. most of which probably come from the variable intake manifold which I won't be using. I can buy an 1994 EB motor with 197,000kms for $500 or an AU motor with 147,000kms for $1000 |

Try not to grind the sump if you put a small v in the steel bar that runs across the front of the crossmember bend it forward then reweld it it will clear this is what has been done to my car and the people that did it have done many they did my whole conversion in 4 hours and yes use your manifold and accessories there are some tricks to using the standard belt set-up but it can be done but you are better of getting all the au gear and using it.
