A better flowing head and bigger exhaust valve is the bulk of it.
Also state of tune and diff gears.

Barely, and not a big factor IMHO. They don't have THAT much more power, but they make better use of it with better diff gears, autos especially. ED XR autos got the 3.45, compared to the Faimonts 3.08. The difference between say a ED GLi manual and an ED XR manual wouldn't be as big.
