My Ed Falcon has decided it wants to start drinking twice as much fuel as it used to, it is starting & running normal, drives as normal, plugs are all looking the same, timing is right but it is just drinking fuel like crazy, 18 to 20 ltres per 100klms, I have gone to the garages around town & my Ford dealer but none have the equipment to check the OBD 1 system, can any one send me in the right direction, maybe you have had this problem or maybe you can help me get a tool to check the OBD system

Fuel consumption can be caused by, vacuum leak, blocked cat, O2 sensor and sometimes MAP sensor. Since your car is running normally, I'd say blocked exhaust or O2 sensor.
Another one could be leak some where in the fuel line. Wouldn't think it'd be stuffed injectors since you said the plugs are fine. How heavy is your foot?

Please pull out your O2 sensor and see if it looks ok and can see the ceramics in the steel cage - Get tested if you can or clean it if it looks like its carbonised or replace it and please let us know if you get better fuel economy. Then read my post

I had a problem with an intermittent misfire that would only occur every now and then, like just for a few seconds every few days.
For the rest of the time, the car ran fine, but fuel consumption for driving around the blue mtns (lots of steep hills) really dived, going from an average of 12km/l to 18km/l. After changing (first) plugs and then leads, and still having the misfire (fuel consumption improved after the plug change from autolite to NGK), a new (second-hand) coil did the trick - the car was noticeably smoother and the fuel consumption went immediately back to normal.

was it the original coil paul ??? the coil in the el had 235,000 and just stopped one day and got stranded on the side of the road. had no warning at all. they now tell me to have a spare in the boot but its a b**ch to change

I'm not sure if this is backed up by fact or not fuel consumption wise, but when I got my EL I noticed it was using a lot of fuel...I didn't ever have a trip meter but the 100ks to school and back used to use a hell of lot more than it should have. I took the thermostat out and it was opening too soon so it was running cold. A new thermostat seemed to fix the problem. Easy enough to check, put it in a saucepan and cook it until it opens and check the temperature and see if it corresponds with what it should be.

Very possibe mate. Does your temp guage needle sit a bit higher with the higher temp thermostat in. I find these small things make a difference to otherwise serviced cars. My O2 sensor had so much carbon build up on it I recon it took a lot longer to heat up and probably thought it was still cold and therefore injected more fuel. Theory yes but then Fords run rich anyway. I changed mine and getting 500km on a tank up from 450km. No racing just daily driver.

Yep it went from being on the line of the 'normal' section to the A where it has sat ever since. And as I said, it wasn't just a guess because I found the old thermo was buggered. Do E-series run richer during warmup? Because if the ecu was constantly throwing in more fuel it'd probably be as you said.

I have done the OBD test & it apears it is the 02 sensor, I will change this & report back.

No idea, but I think it was original as I had all the paperwork when I bought the car and do not remember seeing anything about the coils. Also, it only had 124,000km on the motor, so I figure it was unchanged. Having said that, I have yet to take it on a big drive, so it may be hiding, but so far all is good. I bought a s/h one off ebay for $30, and got it fitted for $95.

Yup. I liked working on my little pulsar - not so much the Ford.
