Hi all,
My ED motor runs like a dream, the oil is perfect with no whiteness or trace that it ever has or had water in it.. There are no bubbles showing up in the resouvour The engine purr's never missing or starting hard. But it's losing between 4 and 5 litres of water a week and I can't find the location.. the welsh plugs re dry,, I can see no water marks on the motor or anywhere else and there are no puddles under the car.. also it only loses water while running it seems. All I can think of is the heater radiator, but I've seen no sign of that and the carpet inside seems dry. Can anyone think of an easy test to see where it is going? The EL isn't ready yet so I have to drive this one around abit longer. rgds Frank |

Just checked both front floors and no sign of water at all.
I'm at a loss here... can't find anything to fix.. |

id recommend pulling out the spark plugs and see if theres a cleaner than the rest one. we had a ea at work about a few months ago with same issue using water leaving no trace, it was running smooth, no water in the oil, no bubbles in header tank and passed a tee kay test, i pulled out the plugs and put my cooling system pressure tester on there for an hour and come back and number 6 was full of coolant. i just ended up being a very slowly leaking head gasket. i replaced the gasket and got 60thou shaved off the head for more compression and it hasnt had a drama since.

I agree, a have seen cars do this, the water was ending up in the cylinder/s, yet no evidence of the normal kind.
While tap water is pretty much free, i'd just keep filling it til your new motor is in.

I'm at a loss here... can't find anything to fix.. if its the heater core the water/coolant should run out of the aircon drain pipe which sticks through the firewall just below the heater hoses.. unless the pipe is blocked then it would run onto the floor.. |

Thats for the tips guys.. I'll check the plugs and the air con overflow..
was wondering if any of those coolant stopleak stuff are any good... maybe it could tide me over till I scrap the car... |

It could also be a cracked head allowing water to get into an exhaust gallery thus evapourating the water leaving no trace. This happened to me in my Patrol

pressure cap on the rad. seal on it could be right s**t.

eseriesaddict, is there any way to tell that without pulling the head?
fiftyone, I checked the seal on the cap.. its in good nick and holds pressure in nicely when it's hot (because loosening it when it's hot and you can hear the steam going out the overflow. |

Have you done a pressure test in the cooling system ? Mine just got worse until the crack got bad enough to allow water into the oil then i noticed the grey oil

I was having the exact same symptoms with my car in December, you would top it up but after a day or 2 the Low Coolant Warning light came on and there was no trace of anything leaking, it turned out to be a head gasket. I would say this could be the problem with yours.

I hope not..
I really don't want to have to change a head gasket on an engine I wasn't planning on keeping anyway. I'll have to do a pressure test I think... really didn't want it to be a head gasket.. |

mate same thing happened to me last week... was losing about 6 litres of coolant a week... was a headgasket.. the coolant was going into the cylinders... cant tell till the heads off.
one thing it was doing was after a while sitting it wouldnt start properly, like something was stopping it turn over... was the coolant in the cylinder.
