hey crew
once again the ed classicfutura wont start this time i was driving and the alternator belt and power steering belt snapped so i put new belts on and she kicked into life but there was a squel and the power steering belt was loose i checked it and it was tensioned properly but then checked again to find out the tensioner pulley was seized so i then removed the power steering belt and started the car with no belt there "BEAUTIFUL" no squeal ran fine jus heavy steering which is only normal i then drove off and noticed the headlights and lights on the dash were really dim and the battery light was on put high beam on and the car spluttered and died a little and the abs light came on and kept going then went to go up a little hill and i just lost all acceleration power and she died some guy i didnt even no sat there for about 3 hours trying to help jump start and diagnose the problem he was in a ba on gas cheers mate now she wont start and i cant work out why alot of people stopped to help but no1 was any the wiseri have checked alot of things but still nothing we have fuel and spark its turning over fine and sometimes kicks over harder like its starting and thenjust goes back to winding again ive checked fuses everything i can think of PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY

Is your alternator in good shape? If your alternator has died, your car will do that coz ur battery has gone flat and isn't being recharged.
try changing the battery or charging your one up. If it starts, you'll be able to drive it for a few minutes untill your battery runs out of juice. |

yes i put a new battery in it and it still wont start
its just turning over but not starting any other ideas and as for the alternator it should be fine but any ideas as to how the tensioner pulley for the power steering would seize? anything?

I think u should aim to get ur car started first. the rest can be fixed later.
Are u sure u have fuel/spark going to the cylinders? Is ur harmonic balancer ok? - 2 belts snapping at the same time is unusual. do u run on gas or petrol? maybe a fuel source isn't getting through. If theres no spark could be coil, distributor cap, or distributor. what do u mean by winding sound? when u go to start the car, does it sound like how it normally does when u go to start it? U will need to eliminate each one b4 u have some idea as to why its not starting. This is what I do (and have done) when my ED didn't want to start either. |

it the interior light globe or fuse blown. If these are blown it will trip smartlock if you have it and it will not supply the ngine with fuel.
As you have a 89 EA i doubt this is the case, You may have lost compression in the engine. If it carby it may be flooded. Other than this check ALL wires under the engine bay. In my EA spac there was a large plug which was just the the right at the rear of the engine (if you were standing at the front looking back) that had come loose and was stopping the engine from starting

Maybe the tensioner seized, snapping that belt, then that belt flung between the other belt and a pulley it was travelling over, snapping it too. Maybe the jerk on the alternator damaged the alternator, seems unlikely though.
I wonder what damage the snapped belts might have done after they let go. They could have damaged the alternator wiring, stopping it from charging. I think one main possibility is that the alternator isn't charging. It sounds like you flattened your battery, and that coupled with a non-functional alternator made your car not really a jumpstart option, if you tried that.

This is what I do (and have done) when my ED didn't want to start either. harmonic balancer is fine runs on just petrol i have checked the fuel lines and pump and its all a1 there is plenty of spark there it all been checked and when i say winding i mean its kicking over fine just not starting butas i stated earlier i put new belts on and she started and was running fine but squeling due to seized tensioner pulley for the power steering belt so i took that belt off and started again and it was fine for so long then just died i have put a new battery in and still nothing all tjhe globes are working so its not interior lights and just to verify 4 every1 its a 94 ED futura classic auto 6 cylinder with smartlock and as u say 2 belts snapping i would say that the tensioner pulley seized god no's how but it did and thaty caused the power steering belt to rub down and snap then fly around causing damage to the alternator belt but is there anyway that i can test my alternator to see if its working without taking it out but that shouldnt stop it from working should it i woulda thought it just would have stoppped it from holding charge

The only way i know to test an alternator is to run it and test for amps, that's not to say it can't be done another way.

the only way i know of to test to see if the alternators working is with a multimeter. With the car off place multimeter on battery and there should be 12 volt, then you start the car and put multimeter on battery again and it should be reading about 14 volt.
Obviously this won't help you as it won't start. If it has a fully charged battery in it the alternator isn't a problem as the car will run for a while before dieing. The biggest thing to check is to see if its a smartlock or a mechanical problem, When car is turned off the smartlock light should be flashing and when you go to start it should turn off after a second or so. If either of these two are different than what i've said you got a smartlock issue not a mechanical problem unless your really unlucky and have both

Also clean the plugs. If it has been cranked and not started the plugs will be fouled. I had a similar issue with the 5.0 and it turned out to be fouled plugs, a new set and she fired right up
