Why does the lid of the EEC V air box have a funnel in it and can it be taken out for better induction?

A funnel?
Do you mean bellmouthed into the airbox?
Bellmouths are there to increase flow.
Comparing a flat cutoff pipe, to a bellmouthed one, the bellmouth will outperform everytime.
If you wanted to increase flow there, the best way would be to increase the diameter of the pipe entering the airbox, and getting/making a larger bellmouth to suit.

If i remember right the EF air box lids were proven to flow better than the EL or AU ones due to the extra pipe peice inside it.

it looks like a trumpet inside the lid of the air box and it exits where the induction pipe goes to the throttle body. Does this create more suction?

Yep, that's called a 'bellmouth'
I don't know the science behind how it works, I just know that it does :D

It sees the source of air drawn through the very middle of the filter and box. As opposed to the EL lid which draws the air directly from that corner of the airbox. Apparantley results in better flow.

you'll find where the EF bellmouth mounts to the airbox & intake pipe is larger then the EL & AU. probably almost double the opening.

EF = 80mm opening. :P

AU = 55mm opening. :?

It flows 18% better than the AU and EL lids, according to Autospeed. They did an article on it.

I'm selling one, $30.

the ef airbox bellmouth mights be bigger at the intake end of the box but it shrinks down too 55mm ant the pointy end, i ended up cutting about 4cm off of it and sliding my pod onto that pipefits perfectly. just have to mount the pod on and angle as not fouls on the top of the box.

pics are of the box lid and of the lid flipped over.

An AU intake pipe flowed 118rwkw, an EF intake on the same motor with a POD (no belmouth) flowed 118rwkw, so i dont at what limit the EF will outflow AU in rwkw's but didnt make much difference to a stock AU motor.

What really restricts the AU intake ... is the pipe between the airbox and throttle body.

I proved this at the last dyno day.

remove the pipe from the throttle body and I made another 5rwkw.

I have the dyno sheet to prove it somewhere ... in the glove box of my car I think

surely the bonnet is open and theres a nice fan blowing on the engine bay when u dyno yeh?
if so, there should be some tiny difference with a big hole in the box.

ps: why do people bother with airbox mods and panel filters?

The bell mouth acts like a venturi in a carburator and increases the air speed as it flows through it.
