does anyone know of ANY differences between the ef and the el standerd I6 motors [NOT XR6 motor].
Ive been told that the BBM is slightly different between models...true/false : arrow: All i am aware of is the coil pack/dizzy change over. |

As far as I know you are right, main differance is dizzy/coil pack and associated parts.
Ef also have differant air inlet. Haven't seen anything differant with the BBM. There may be some other minor differances

Not strictly part of the engine but the mounts are different. EF has 'hydrolic' dampened mounts. Whereas EL is bolt on.

The EF I understand has a dual runner intake wheras the EL and a single peice. Airbox is different on EF to EL, Airbox on Ef is more efficient as well.

EL's have dizzy and coil, not coilpack and in this case a different ECU.
Different top half of the BBM, and a different crank. 8 weights instead of the 12 on the EF (I think thats the right number) to allow it to be smoother at higher rpms. Different alternator (110amp EF vs 100amp EL) and intake piping as well. Otherwise, they are the same engine, until the hybrid AU EL engines made an appearance. |

Hybrid EL/AU engines? Did they come out in the EL? Mine is a Dec 97 EL, one of the last. Did any EL have VCT?
Cheers, DG. |

Cheers, DG. Hybrid EL's started from Feb 98. They had an AU head and crank, but an EL block. But none were VCT. And yours is very far from one of the last, considering they ran until August 1998. You would say mine and my old mans Fairlanes are one of the last, they are both May 98. |

I dont think that this is right as the hybrids only ran an AU head and a standard E series block to my understanding. The AU crank has 4 or so less counterweights and bigger journals and so wouldnt fit into a standard E series block without some serious main bearing tunneling. I dont even know if its within the scope of the standard block

I know they changed the number of counterweights on the crank betweek EF and EL. Less crank weight made for a quicker smoother rev.
Maybe it was the other way round.. They got an AU block as well, but the EL crank with oversized journals to suit the block. As an owner of an EL with one of these engines, I did find out everything about them. But I've drawn a blank now. |

It used EL conrods and pistons. And they had a unique crank to match the main bearing journal size of the AU block to the EL bigend journal size.

My XR6 has a build date of March 1998 so does that mean if I change the cam that i have to go for an AU spec

you would really need to find out if you have AU head as the rocker ratios are different to e series

If it is an AU head, it will have a part number of 96DT-xxxxx-xxx on the front below the tickford wings imprint. If you have that, then you need an AU cam. |

would the power between the early el's and the ones built after feb 1998 differ if it had the hybrid motor??
