hi all,

i have an EF 1996 series II fairmont on about 110,000 kms.

the transmission slips, and I was wondering what could be the problem? its got no towbar, never towed, previous owner hardly ever drove it, and recently the transmission is slipping when i floor it (it would either slip gear and rev out, or hang high and not click into gear on time)
also, slams into the first few gears as well.

fluid low? but would low fluid cause trans slipping?

i cant think of any wear and tear, its only on 110,000kms.

any thoughts?

When was it last serviced?

Have you checked the fluid level?

What colour is the fluid? Is it still a cherry colour or is it brown or black?

thats the thing, i dont think the transmission has ever been touched. recently i did a coolant flush, the coolant pipes havent even been touched, still same from factory (even the hose clamp screw caps were still on them)

time for a service?

Check your fluid, bet it is low and dark.

If it has never been touched in 110,000km, then it will need servicing big time.

process of elimination, service it first and report back, could be the solenoids are shot but dirty and low fluid will make them act up big time aswell.

ok update:

i was talking to my dad, and i told him to take it and get it checked. and this is what he said:

apparently, he got it inspected by two mechanincs and BOTH mechanics said the same thing. they checked the tranny and diff and said that it has been thrashed, i.e the owner did heaps of burnouts. hence why the diff whines a bit and the tranny slips and slams gears. and they gave some more explanations...

i sold the car to my mate for a really low price, for about 8-10 months cos he didnt have a car, until i got it back recently. the car was in s**t condition and i felt sorry that it was dying at only about 100 000kms old. i got it back off him, he was planning to dump it to the wreckers.. tyres bold until metal frame, traces of multiple orgams on the ceiling, coke bottles exploded over the dash and windscreen, seeds in the seat rails and soy sauce in the gear selector. so, he could be the reason why the trans is thrashed? (didnt expect him to be a hoon)

but my dad has an exaggeration factor of 10, and can sometimes bs a little too.

still im thinking a service and inspection would be a good idea... just to check for myself too
ill go for a service. it would be beneficial
