Hey, i just recently bought a ef for a run around car, but the last few days its been blowing s**t of white smoke for about the first 5 minutes in teh morning, i first thought it might have been because i was parking it facing up hill, so i tried turning it around over night, same problem, tried disconnecting the pcv, still same problem. So now i'm thinking maybe valve stem seals or something? can anyone else shed any light on the situation?

Im not 100% sure what it smells like, ive never owned a car that blows smoke before. Im fairly sure its oil, and im 100% sure it isnt steam. It stinks really badly. Slow head gasket leak is deffinately a possibility. There doesnt appear to be any water int eh oil, but i have checked the coolant for oil yet.

White smoke is water being combusted.White mist on a cold day can be normal.
Open your radiator cap and see if it's bubbling whilst it idles. Obviously when cool/cold.

Yeah im not a little white mist, im talking filling the street up with thick white smoke that stinks like s**t, and doesnt have to be morning either, it can be middle of the day 20 degrees, as long as its the first time its been started on taht day. It seams lik a little oil, or possibly water is getting int eh combustion chamber over night.

Water is white smoke.
Oil smoke is blueish from rings. Screwed up top end with oil being burnt is black smoke. Overfuelling is less black smoke and a flat sound from the engine or a burble under load. Is it using radiator fluid?

It sounds like the exact same thing that caused me to rebuild the motor in the xr6, after which I was told it could be something to do with the cold start part of the ecu playing up. However it doesn't do it after the rebuild, so
Good excuse for a rebuild with some mods I say

I would say head gasket. Click on the link below and play video. Shows the exhaust of a car with blown head gasket.

That looks axactly like mine, but it does it for 5 mons then goes away, so im assuming slow gasket leak? Thanks for the reply guys, i might buy one of the gasket kits and do the head gasket, valve stem seals etc etc all in one hit.

Yep you have a pinhole leak somewhere that seals up when it's hot.
Pinhole leaks like this aren't always in the head, though most times they are. We had a racecar that did this and we pulled it apart a couple of times but didn't fix it,i eventually figured it out and it was a pinhole leak in number 2 barrel in a 400 cube race engine.Swap out the sleeve and viola. There are ways to stop it without flipping the lid so to speak, but it's up to you.

Ahh ok, whats the best way around this? Im happy on the tools and could do a head gasket, but if theres something easier that would be much preffered.

gasket stop. chuck it in the coolent but NOT RECOMENDED
know a guy that has done three headg's and then tried some and hasnt had a prob since. so i dont know to be 100% sure, go to a mechanic and get a hydrocarbon test done on the coolent. it might also smell like fuel a little too.
