Few questions about my EF GLi cooling.
Its done 280k kms. Radiator, thermostat and water pump got replaced my Loob ma d**k 20-30k kms ago. Now what is the right temp the car should be running at so its not in 'warm up mode'?? Currently its sitting just under the bracket for NORMAL as in 2 needle widths below the L side of the bracket. Its only about 14 degrees this morning but didnt even get in to the bracket. Now im doing 14.5l/100kms. Should my thermostat be replaced with something else....if so what do i replace it with.

well mine has done 230000, just been serviced, replaced the thermostat (95 EF Futura)
she now just sits on the A of normal, all the time. it shoots up there pretty quick after startup and will not move. before i replaced the thermostat i had the same problem u do (below the bracket in winter) but it went to the O or somthing stupid in summer. i hope this has fixed my summer problem, but very happy in winter now doing about 13.4L/100km with the new temp. Just a stock part off the floor from Repco

Mine also sits on the 'A' in Normal.
With genuine AU 92° thermostat, Radiator and pump are almost 2 years old. Car has 210,000 on it.

mine sits on the bottom of the L when cruising on the freeway (as of trip this morning in rain) and in city gets to around the A..
the dash tells me lowest is around 80 deg, up to about 87 deg. i have excessive fuel consumption, but it was the same, if not worse before i put this thermostat in. im assuming its out of warm up mode, but ive never heard an official figure of where warm up mode ends, i would put a bet down at probably 70 degrees.

They are suppose to run a 92° thermostat. Running a lower one would explain why the engine is running so cool on the freeway. You may be right about warmup mode, it might be finished well before 80°. However running so cool would definately effect the performance of the heater. If the cooling system is working efficiently there should be no reason to run a colder thermostat.

When I lived in NZ I had several cars that in winter -5 degrees to +8 that stayed stone cold (no heater)
I used to shove a hunk of cardboard down the front of the radiator and that would bring up the temp(trial&error) and whip it out come warmer times. |

yeah dad used to travel down the freeway here and he had to do that or the cooling system would almost freeze.
Another mate had a problem where the petrol would freeze in the jet of his carby.

Yeah go the new thermostat, replaced mine and I am getting much better economy and the engine just seems alot happier. Its a pretty easy job and well worth it for the 10 bucks or whatever I paid for the thing.
