Hey,
I got a problem with the EF at the moment. The car ussually revs in between 700 and 900 rpm on idle. The problem only occours when i jab the excellerator or on stopping. The revs will fall to under 200 rpm and sometimes it will fall to 0 and stall. If it doesn't stall it will bounce back up quickly to the idle of in between 700 and 900 rpm. It is really frustrating when i am approaching an intersection and come to almost stopping and then the car stalls because of no revs....also frustrating at the Maccas drive-thru(stalls every time i move up a car space)! Not good on the clutch or fuel ecconemy when i have to give it a jab to stay running. I installed a power steering switch a few days back but i don't think that it would be the problem. Any ideas of what the problem could be or how to fix it? Any one had the same problem? Cheers, Tim

i had this problem - did you have the battery off when you installed the power steering switch? every time my battery is disconnected for a while, this problem occurs. my guess is the ECU is relearning. it stops doing it after a while.

Hi mate.
just a thought on this issue. You can perform the correct relearn procedure so the ecu will perform properly. Start the car in park and have all lights and loads off. let it idle for a minute. next leave the car in park and turn on the air con. again for one minute. Now put your transmission in drive with all loads off again and apply the handbrake. let it idle for one minute. now still leave it in drive and turn all loads on , again for one minute. put the car in park position and turn the engine off , leave the ignition on though. all loads of and wait for one minute. next hold the throttle wide open again for one minute. now take the key out of the ignition barrel , and then start it. This will set the ecu for correct auto shift patterns and also your idle speed will sort itself out. hope this helps |

How do you do that for a manual?

Hi mate.
never tried it on a manual. however try this. In neutral for one minute with all loads off. Then one minute with all loads on. turn the engine off and the leave the ignition on. dont touch the accelerator and leave it for one minute. then hold the throttle wide open for one more minute. then take the keys out. |

Hey,
Tried what you said with the ECU learning however i am still having the same issues. I don't think that it is as bad...but it still isn't good. I guess it will be a case of playing the waiting game. Tim

Try stopping with the stick in neutral because another possibility may be your clutch is out of adjustment and not cleanly disengaging. The ECU may compensate for this slight contact by increasing revs that you probably wouldn't notice.

I had this problem, turned out to be my leads.
Replaced and went as good as ever. Also had the same problem another time when my head gasket was on its way out. Was running like s**t and stalling.

Replaced and went as good as ever. you could be right there. i replaced my leads last weekend and it goes much better. mind you it was only running on 4 cylinders.... i snapped two of the leads just trying to get them off they were that f**ked. i'll prob have the battery off this weekend so i'll see if it does it again or not.

The leads should be good as they were only replaced a few months back so i don't think that it would be the problem.
The problem only started to occur after i disconnected the battery the other day when i was fitting a new power steering switch. It is when the enging is returning from above idle (drivng or reving) to idle that it dips down low and if it doesn't stall it jumps back up quickly to the correct RPM at idle. Other times it stalls. if i am driving and i go to change gears and hold the clutch engaged for a few seconds the revs will die down and and dip or stall... I tried the ECU relearn thing again to no avail... Tim
