My ef fairmont is using 15.5 L/km in the city, with the a/c off and i swear it never gets revved beyond 2000rpm. The oil, air filter, cooling, sparks etc are all good and the tyre pressure is 37psi.
Seriously pissing me off that it uses so much, is there a well known O2 sensor problem? Cheers Guys |

Well the oxy sensors have a life span of around 100,000km from what i remember - i dunno if i'd call it a common problem...
15L not too bad for city driving in my opinon. How's she go on the highway?

I'm hearing a lot of comments on these O2 sensors ... can you check em to see if they are functioning correctly or do you just replace em every 100k ??

Also check coolant sensor operation as this can give false reading (cold engine constantly).Any other symptoms,ie,black smoke,lack of power,etc........

They can completely f**k up, but EEC should flag an error code if this is the case. Not common tho... As they get older, they become less responsive - meaning EEC spends less time at the ideal air/fuel ratio... easy for me to see what they are up to (v8 has two) as have gauge setup. Otherwise i spose hook up alanogue multimeter and watch voltage. Should swing from 0.1v to 0.9v couple of times per second (i.e. average 0.45v-0.5v), when engine is warm and idling/crusing.

where is this error code displayed? Cluster or expensiveforddiagmachine?

Im not sure if there's a HEGO error code... maybe always rich/always lean could suggest s**t readings from HEGO? i.e. codes 171-177 relate to fuel system being at adaptive limit, but still showing rich or lean signal from HEGO... code 41 shows HEGO not switichin on US EEC, not sure about ours.. on the highway? like a pig in s**t, she loves it, average about 7.5-8 L/100 km with the air con on.
I reckon you're right, the O2 sensor is shot, any ideas on replacement costs? Cheers |

15.5 is reasonable if it heavy city driving with lots of start stop, traffic lights etc.
On average I run around 12- 12.5 on any normal week however my trip to work is 27k's with most of it being 100kph. Out on the highway, non-stop driving, 8-9L is nomal.

i think any of the figures listed seem fine.
more impotantly, how many km's you getting till the 80km warning comes on as L per 100km vary alot depending no a fair amount of things?

geez, what city streets do you use, that i can avoid 
good highway economy is 8l/100kms there is no such thing as good city economy as it is so variable and depends enormously on how much start/stop driving you do. expect anything from 17l/100kms to highway economy

sweet, cheers guys. I'm not too sure with these Ford I6 engines, till this point all the cars I've driven have been Holdens. Yeah, shoot me now!
Back to the point, I can get 450 km to a tank, and the roads I speak of are Dandenong Road and Wellington around the Clayton and Mulgrave area. Thats where I go to uni, and hence im a complete povo! |
