Hi All,
A while ago I purchased another EF XR6 on which the rego had lapsed. I rang VicRoads today to make a booking for a registration inspection and was asked for an engine number as well as the VIN number. I had thought that the engine number was part of the VIN number and said that to the VicRoads person that I was talking to ... who replyed that the engine number was different. Not knowing any better I replied that I would call again once I had the engine number. So off I went to have a closer look at the vehicle ID tags to see if they listed the engine number ... which they did not. So I grabbed a torch and had a look around the block on the exhaust side looking for anything that resembled an engine number ... I couldn't find anything that stood out as an engine number ... the only thing I found was a 4 digit alphanumeric code cast into the block near the bell housing. Tried a google search and came up with conflicting opinions of where people thought the engine number is located so that really didn't help. I then had a look on my current XR6's engine block and found that the 4 digit alphanumeric code was indeed different to the other XR. To further add to my confusion I dug out an old registration label for my current XR and it confirmed my earlier thought as the engine number listed on the rego sticker was part of the VIN number. So if the engine number is part of the VIN number is it stamped anywhere on the block? Does anyone know exactly where to look for this elusive number? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Alan.

Engine number will only be part of vin number if car still has original factory fitted engine.Ef six cylinder engine number is located at rear of engine block on exhaust side(Note:According to the factory workshop manual I have here, early build vehicles have engine number stamped on front of cylinder block on exhaust side.).

Thanks for the replies guys ...
I revisited my workshop manual and found the locations that you both referred to ... don't know how I missed it when flicking through it earlier today. Will look at below cylinder 1 exhaust port tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

So I had a look at both my XR's today and found the engine number on both.
On my red XR which is an EF 1 the engine number was stamped under the exhaust port of number one cylinder ... And on my green XR which is an EF 2 (the one I'm getting registered) the engine number was stamped on the back of the block flange where it meets the bell housing again on the exhaust side. Both cars still have their original engines. So EF 1 is at the front of the block and EF 2 is at the rear.
