I agree Paul... As I said, throw a $120 cam into a standard I6 and it will make it go...

But put that same $120 cam into the XR engine, and your back to where you started, being a couple of car lengths behind in a race.

I believe 2 of our members here proved that.. One with a Fairlane, the other with an EF Ghia. Put the wade into the Fairlane, it became a winner. Put the same cam into the Ghia, its back to being the winner...

Ford could have done alot more with these heads, but when you have to consider development costs, emissions, warranty and servicing their hands are usually pretty tied...
i belive you could be referringt o me and turtle
Turtle had an ef ghia tickford 6 with 3.45, he fitted extractors exhaust no cat and wade cam - it pulled 123kw on dyno
i had standard i6 with exhaust extractors and wade cam, 3.23 diff pulled 123kw also.
exact same i was just behind him in a drag race just because i had a 3.23 diff and he had 3.45 not to mention that couple extra hundred kgs!

The Tickford engines are great for what they are - effortless / luxury motoring (magazine article from way back yonder)...they make max torque under 2K in the rev range...and yes it is a package deal - the 3.45 helps in the low-down and the cam profile does the rest for the up-top (ie after ~3K)...for a stock car, they drive much nicer than the standard I6 IMHO...and after having both, I can feel the difference - I love driving the ghia everyday - still not bored of her :P

i think everyone may be missing the point here wea re talking engines here, forget the diff for a sec.

ef svo makes a good point, the fact of the matter is for the extra gains that you get why would you bother spending that extra money buying a tickford motor when with the money you would save by buying a standard engine, which i would say would be almost a grand, throw that monet in to the standard i6 and its gonna flog the tickford 6

Yes I agree with you Tim...but take that same $1K and get a Wade Stage 2 for the Tickford engine...and you're in front of the standard I6 again.

It's not just a discussion of making 7 more FWKW than stock...it's a matter of drivability...and not just down the strip, I'm talking daily driving - I'm sure most ppl that have an ELXR 6 or EL Ghia *don't* spend most of their days running down the quarter :roll:

Again, I think everyone needs to look at what you get with a Tickford Enhanced Vehicle of the EF/EL era :

* Slightly more aggressive cam (on the zorst side mostly)
* 3.45 LSD
* Upped fuel pressure regulator
* Very mild head porting (AFAIK)
* Slightly lower / stiffer springs with thicker anti-sway bar(s).
* Free-er flowing cat back zorst
* ECU to merry up the diff, transmission, higher fuel pressure etc

Talking bout the head by itself is borderline pointless - it's a package, not just 7 more killowatts like everyone is saying. A day at the track will prove a few things - will have to wait for the next Heathcote day methinks :)

haha yeh for sure but if your on a budget then u dont have the extra 1k to spend on the ticky motor caus u spent that buyint he thing in the first place.

it a value for money thing, its obvious the tickford motors are gonna be better than standard, thats what you pay for when these things were new!

I believe the XR's also came out with a Heavy Duty tailshaft also, correct me if im wrong.

Personally in the first place i didnt even want another six after selling the Xf, i was after the EL XR8 187kw model.

But yeah im pretty happy with the perfromance of the Tickford six so cant complain really. i think its a great engine.....I just need to start putting in some $$$$ into the motor :D

Don't XR heads have bigger valves as well?

im with paul, tickford werent that great
they could have done alot more to make the xr 6 stand out, i mean you were paying for the looks and driveline setup with the xr6, not the engine

is that all?

Some ED I6's only put out a rwkw figure in the low 90's (one was 89) while mine did 116 and it is pretty stock (zaust, extract's).

Are we sure that Ford didn't do the same thing with the XR6 as Holden did with the s/charged 6? That is, fudge the power figures (too low for XR6 or too high for normal) so the V8 fans felt as if they were getting something much more powerful.

Have to agree its still better than what they have done with the new XR6's. Imagine getting beaten in a drag by a stock XT because urs is heavier, lol
