Hey,
I gave my ED Fairmont a new look about 2 weeks ago and while I'm repairing the front end I thought I might as well convert to EF/EL Thermo fans. Now the problem is getting the old fan off. It is supposed to completely screw off isn't it? because mine isn't, it's just turning and turning.. If it is ment to come off completely then I think I've stripped the thread... Any idea's? Oh and if this helps the fan was bent as that got hit in the crash.. no broken fins just looked crooked. Thanks, James

Not 100% sure but its an opposite handed (left) thread - which way have you been turning it?

I know it's an opposite thread, I was turning it towards the airbox (imagining it as a front view I was turning the bolt clockwise).

im pretty sure iv heard somewhere that you have to jam a poll of a large screw driver between the fan and something else to stop it spinning when your undoing it

Ahhh so I might not have stripped the thread it's just spinning and not going anywhere. I'll let someone confirm this and I'll give it round 2 first thing tomorrow.

Yes you have to stop the water pump pulley from spinning by holding a screwdriver or something similar in between the pulley bolts.
Then simply undo the fan nut, and yes, its left hand thread indeed.

You can also try adding tension to the fan belt (just pushing it) so that it tightens up - normally does enough to allow the fan to be undone.

thats why its called a clutch fan lol it would still spin if you hold the fan

I got a big screwdriver in between the bolts holding it to the water pump to lock it and then just spun it off the opposite direction.. was a piece of cake surprisingly since I'd never done it before at the time. (I converted to thermo's recently myself)

I've used a variety of techniques but my prefered these days is to jam a wrecker bar between the outside of the belt at the water pump pulley, and the harmonic balancer. If you don't have a 32mm spanner, vice grips on the nut work fine.

lol I don't have a 32mm spanner but my dad had something similar. Once I figured out how to do it last night it was piece of cake this morning. Thanks for the help guys maybe more to come soon.
