Hi guys,
I needed to replace the air intake on my fairmont, so I went to the wreckers, and got one. I see though that it has an extra pipe / hose on the inside of the upper section, that the one in the car didn't have... Is there any benefit to it, or should I remove it? Attachment:

There is probably not much in it either way. The minimum diameter of the tube is smaller, but it is bell-mouthed for much more efficient flow on entry, so probably not much difference either way in flow or restriction.
But you can do better. Replace the tube with a section of 3" PVC pipe, putting a bell-mouth in it with a heat gun, using a funnel or similar as a former. The bell-mouth makes a big difference to air flow. Here are pics of it: http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=107828
