Hi guys
I have a ford EF Fairmont and I'm Just wondering if anyone has had any experience in changing over a heater hose. Now, I went into supercheap trying to get the hose, but because I have never looked at changing this, I have now learnt that there is 3 or 4 hoses. I was told that I need to change the hose going to the tap but apparently there is 2. I think the best way to find out which one is for me to get under the car, but where is the heater hose and co located ? Also, is there any tricks i should know about? Or is it as simple as undoing the clamps and getting the hose off and then replacing it? Thanks Daniel |

While your under there do all of them. If one is stuffed the others won't be far off and they are a pain if they go and you are on the side of the road.

thanks mate. the only thing is they pretty expensive! Is there a cheap way of going about it?
Also, once i disconnect one, will this flush the coolant out ? |

Yes, most of your coolant will either fall on you or the road. Depends how quick you are getting out of the way.
Which hose is it? the one from the thermostat housing metal pipe? or the one from the firewall? Both are a PITA to do, but as SWC has already said, even worse on the side of the road. There is a third hose that is 10mm in diameter and approx 15cm long that goes between the two metal heater pipes under the inlet manifold that I would also recommend you do. If you have Bursons near you, try them for the hoses too. Cheers BenJ

sweet thanks mate. I'l try head over to burnsons tomorrow. how much would i be looking at paying? its a pain cause i was just about to do the whole oil and coolant tomorrow, but now i dont know whether or not to do this first. is it as easy as just undoing the clamps on the hoses and then replacing them with the new?

other thing is, how old are your Radiator hoses? If you are going to loose your coolant, you might as well look at doing them as well. Depends on how much you want to spend.

It can be that simple in theory, but, access is the difficult part.
You will need to get at them from under the car, and if you do the hose from the firewall as well, it depends on the angle of the hose clamp, but usually from the top and back of the BBM. Get the coolant, but don't put it in straight away. Once you have all the new hoses back on just put water in it but not full, and after a couple of days when you are happy there are no leaks, add the coolant to it. As for cost, I am not sure. It has been a couple of years since I needed them. Cheers BenJ

You can do the one hose if you want, all we are saying is that if one is dodgy the others are probably not far off being the same.

Ok thanks and to find out which of the hoses it is , is to get under and check it right?? there isnt a common one that goes 1st?

daniel just a word of advise the ones on the firewall, go to repco and get some rubber grease(comes in handy) as if they are to tight to get on and you happen to force them to hard you may have a problem with cracking the solder joint on your heater core pipe.
p.s. dont go to supercheap or autobarn as they dont have a clue what your on about. |
