Hi all I picked up a factory 5 speed ef futura the other day. It all goes well until you hit 3500rpm and it begins to studder, run like s**t and will not rev any further.
I have done a bit of searching around and have replaced the map sensor (tried 2 different ones), new throttle body sensor, new ISC etc and have checked over all the vacuum lines and all seem to be in place. The ecu is a facotry manual one so that shouldn't be the problem (I think 2nd stage of bbm manifold not kicking in) I pulled the cat off and it looks like it has already been knocked through, chucked at socket through it and came out other side no worries so I re installed that thinking its Not the problem. I have also replaced the O2 sensor so I am at a bit of a loss here.. Any help would be appreciated

Check ignition leads and coil pack.

Yeah mate leads are near new so plan on putting a coil pack on it tomorrow.
But yeah I was leaning more towards something with the bbm not functioning due to 3500 rpm look out which is very close to bbm change over and heard of other people with similar problems due to this and reasons such as blocked cats as mentioned above

Fuel filter is the culprit. just feels like it hits a wall right?

It won't be the BBM switch-over. It would still rev out, just produce less power at top end. Besides, the switch-over is about 3800rpm.

I am lost with it at the moment.
Today I took the cat off again completely and tried revving and still won't go past 3-3500 rpm. I then replaced the fuel filter with no results. I replaced the coil pack and little capacitor thing (sorry can't remember real name) with a spare one I had lying around and one again no result! I then replaced the ISC and tbs again with no improvement So far I have replaced fuel filter, map sensor, tbs, ISC, coil pack, I can't think of too much else it could be? What else should I be looking for??

dirty injectors? also could have a lazy fuel pump, but usually they just die but you never know..

Grab a multi-meter and check the resistance of your spark plug leads, leads breaking down can cause the symptoms you are describing.
From memory it should be 16k/ohm per metre (+ or - 6k/ohms) If any are reading stupidly higher than the others, then it needs replacing.

Cheers for replies guys!
Tomorrow I will go to the wreckers and grab a crank angle sensor, another coil pack, leads just to be sure. I might also try putting another fuel reg on but I don't think it is fuel related because when she is spluttering out it smells like she is running rich not lean. If crank angle sensor, leads and coil pack don't do it ill investigate the fuel side of things further and grab a multimeter from my old man (mines busted) Will let all know results

just a long shot, but make sure nothing is blocking the air supply from snorkel to t/b.

Cheers mate, I have had the whole air box/ intake system off when doing the coil pack etc today and still made no difference. Car will not even free rev on neutral past 3500.
Also was just an idea but could the harmonic balancer be stuff (inside spinning) throwing timing or anything out? I doubt it could if timing was set correctly to begin with. Cheers

Maybe a little left-field: have you tried swapping the ECU with a known good one? If you're getting unburned fuel, it sounds like a spark-cut rev limiter. Maybe the ECU is malfunctioning - as they tend to do - and is doing something similar to a rev limiter. A long shot probably.
