I am considering purchasing an EF 4.0. I don't know if it needs a new head gasket or has a cracked head.

What would cost in parts and labor for those jobs?

If it has a cracked head, I'd be steering clear from it. It'd be more of a headache even if it was cheap, especially if you are giving it to a professional to do.

If you do it yourself, I'd say it wouldn't be too bad to fix. Since 4.0L heads are floating around everywhere really.

A head gasket change done by a mechanic can cost from $800 upwards depending where you go and how much damage is done. Though I'd say maybe $1000 is more ideal. A DIY can set you back $500 or even less.

I did mine for a touch under $250 with all new gaskets, head bolts, shaved head and even new oil and an oil filter!

A mechanic will charge you anywhere north of $800

you can pick up good heads from a wrecker if you know what you are looking at.

i picked up a early EL head from a low KM wagon for $160.

phongus is in the right ball park! mine just 3 weeks ago cost me near $1400 but i know I got ripped off with some of the prices of the parts, obviously the machining of the head was the most expensive, krytox and I were going to do it at a touch under $700 which I wish we did as I didnt expect it to cost that much from the mechanic

Holy s**t guys!

Do you also get your head gold plated?!

Mine cost me as follows...

1. Machining of head - $45
2. Head straightening - $50
3. ACL gasket kit - $70
5. Head bolts - $50
6. Gasket goo - $10

TOTAL - $225

Took me one day to do.

lol... nah I knew the guy... But still, you only need to get the head shaved. It should only cost about about $60.

So really $550 cos of the crap gasket and no new bolts?!

Dazzat, I swear you would have had change from $500 for your car, thats even with an AU gasket and bolts.

I woulda grabbed a head from the wreckers for $50 and machined that.

But Time, Work and Children kinda make people have to use mechanics!

To get a head straightened, valves tested and all that jazz is about $150+ depending if anything else needed testing such as pressure testing.

But yeah, you got a damn good bargain to get the head done o_O.

I'm sure the ACL gasket kit costs more then $70 though :? and if you want to use an AU head gasket, it'll cost another odd $50 or something.

There are always ways to save, but for an average person who is not doing the job. It can add up quiet quickly.

I have had 2 head gaskets done.
one cost $400 in Kyneton after radiator failed and boiled super heated. Inc shave...lasted 100,000klm
the other was $2200 including full engine out and welsh plugs, rear main, water pump, idler pulleys, injector clean, head crack welding etc.
I would have done it myself but I had no spare car or garage to work in.

Do yourself a favor and THROW the mono torque (head only) gasket in the bin.
