hey all
my mates folks car has, for the 2nd time, overheated & dropped its coolant first time, earlier this year, i popped over, and noticed the problem straight away - fraud had forgotten to replace the intake snorkel when servicing, so i replaced it & it seemed to fix the problem. however, it seems to have struck again! the coolant is green, and the oil (according to my mate) looks fine - as i thought it may be the head gasket. although i'd imagine it could still be the gasket, any thoughts on what else it could be? thermostat stuffed? blocked radiator? any thoughts would be great! cheers

Firstly is it loosing coolant or Drops the whole lot?
When you idle at the lights can you smell glycol? If its slowly leaking you should be able to see coolant around the cork sump gasket, Also Have you looked behind the exhaust manifold between cyl 5 & 6? if its wet it sounds like a typical head gasket. Hope its not a head gasket, It could as simple as the plastic Bung in the water tank of the radiator on the OFF-SIDE (10mm plug). hope this helps Andrew

Is dave's car doing that again???
I'd be compression testing the engine. Cause my guess would be head gasket.

yeah its daves car again
its going into fraud today to see what the problem is, although i wouldn't be 100% that its the head, as there are a few other options (esp radiator) i'd be looking at first.

I'd say one of the side tanks has split and when its hot it drips out.

it's not just the coolant tanks cap it it? cause if the valves and s**t in them get stuck or something it can over heat and lose coolant out overflow hose!

like krytox said, I've done the gasket in my old EF XR6 and it used to loose green coolant down the side of the block and leave a green stain
the gasket deteriated between 5 & 6 cyc, I had a mechanic mate who helped me but I did the majority of the work myself. I also got the head tested at the same time and a light shave to straighten it all back to newish all up cost me $600 mates rates and the car of the road for 2 days. I replaced a couple of things along the way as you do like leads, plugs, themostat and housing, gasket kit. |

like already mentioned, do a pressure test, it is most likely to be one of the side tanks of the radiator if it leaks while driving.

a while back i had the same problem, at first i replaced the thromostat and radiator cap but to no avail the problem still occured. it turned out to be a blocked radiator had the entire cooling sys reverse flushed and cleaned and now shes fine

my EF was dropping coolant lastweek, found a rip in the large heater hose under the inlet manifold :S what a b****** to fix. number one rule, once one hose goes, replace them all.

Krytox asked if can smell glycol at lights. Does this mean external coolant leakage krytox?
