Anyone able to tell me how to mount the EF knock sensor onto an AU block, the holes are different size thread.

unless you remove the stud and drill and tap the thread you cant...
but you can wire the au one up to your ecu..

Fit a EF timing cover and sump to the AU motor.
No K frame clearance issues either.

thats not going to help his knock sensor problem?
although i would keep the alloy sump as its all part of the strength on the au bottom end and it also helps with oil cooling and engine noise reduction.

It's also not that easy, they're not straight interchangeable.

Brilliant, that sounds like a better option. I figured that since the sensors were so drastically different that they wouldn't be intercompatible with the different ECU's.

with my E series block, I removed the stud from a AU block and the threads were the same for the block end of the stud

I'd almost be tempted to try an run the AU ecu esp if you can score a AU I smart lock ecu as the coil packs are the same. i dont think it would be that hard to modify the engine loom to do this. minor rewire to run all the injectors as sequentail as opposed to batch fire
