Well after finding a cheap EF lid from the wreckers(jeez it was hard to find one in good nick) paid $10. I fitted it to the EL fairmont and replaced the pipe from the strut tower to the lid with a piece of fabricated exhaust pipe that I got made up for $30. So the intake remains 3in ,76mm all the way from the throttle body to the lid.
Put the car back on the dyno and pulled 120rwkw, that's another 4rwkw, i noticed as i drove the car the throttle response was so much better and power down low was also up. When i look at that 55mm hole in the original lid i just can't wonder what ford were thinking. It was obvious the cheapest way they could detune the car to have a market for the xr6 models. Odd; a lot of people tend to think that little pipe ford put in the airbox lid helps with performance.
I cant say either way, even tho i got both, but they for different engines; my NL v8 one has a wide rounded metal ring that goes into the air box, not like the tube that the ef box had. Only thing i think ill change is the tube from the box to the engine, thats ugly and has pionts which *may* not help air flow.

I have wondered about that tube inside the airbox on my EFII XR6 - it seems to be a small diameter and therefore fixes the max size of the intake.
What happens if I remove it? - any improvement ? PC |

I did the same mod ages ago after someone posted up a link to an Autospeed article on airboxes. This was in the pre FM crash days.
I bought a new EF airbox lid from Ford for about $80. In the article they found that the EF lid flowed a heap more air than the EL lid. I think it was around 17 or 18cfm more.

yeah the EL,AU lid flowed 93cfm while the EF lid flowed 110cfm. The bellmoth in the EF lid starts at 50mm with a bellmouth out to 80mm. Works good sucking in the air. 17% better than the au,el on a bench flow test and only lost 3% of airflow when no filter in box.

1997 EL Fairmont, 81000km on the clock
Upgrades; EL GT Snorkel, EF airbox lid with 3in intake, Splitfire 8.8mm Leads, panel filter & plugs, 120RWKW. what have you done to get that much at the wheels mate... isnt it about 103 standard... and the upgrades you listed doesnt look like it can do 17rwkw

l just have a good engine buddy, 1 out of every 100 or so engines that come out of a factory production line are close to blueprint spec(everything is balanced nicely) which gives them a bit more grunt. Why do you think i brought the car in the first place.
I drove 15 EF and EL 6cyl cars and this one was the fattest of them all. Just when you put the foot down it just responded so much better than the other 14 cars i test drove. Took me 3 months to find this car and i'm very happy with the purchase. Cheers Luke. |

don't have digital camera but look at the site aufalcon.com in the tech articles they have put a ef lid onto an au which has the same lid as the EL. I didn't like how they connected the lid up so i got one made up.
cheers Luke. |

willl this mod make much of a dif to ef gli? Being an EF i wouldnt touch inside the airbox other than adding a better filter if you think they are worth the $$$. After that get snorkle and get bent pipe instead of the pip the EF has from the airbox to the TB - that thing sux, i still have it on my old fairlane, never got around to ditching it.

Well, id have a look at the thread that xr8 dismantler has got going on for mandrel bend intake pipes as he is making a heap up aparently.
Cost from him is 200ish i think and some people get them made at exhaust places for 70-130 dollars but then require paint/chrome/polish/treatment.. Install is easy as, pretty much plug n play - no stuffing around with fiddly bits or tech mech junk.
