I got a friend with ef fairmont, they say they got to hit the dash to get it to start sometimes..
What exactly does the map sensor do?

Yes inside the bonnet. It basically tells how much fuel to give the engine as the manifold pressure changes as the throttle body butterfly opens.

If you have to hit the dash to start it its probably the body control module not the map sensor.
