I have had some problems with my EF recently. It seemed to be running on 5cyl at idel yet was running fine at higher revs. We diagnosed several possibly causes and made the following repairs - cat was block/collapsed - removed contents, leaking inlet manifold gasket - gasket changed, changed all plugs and leads, changed ignition module, changed thermstat gasket as it was leaking.
The car runs heaps better now. Only problem is that it runs fine for first 5 minutes of driving then starts to slightly miss or runs rough at low revs (1500rpm or less) idle is not too bad but seems to run rough upwards from idle to 1500-2000rpm. Any ideas - i cant keep spending money on bits without fixing the actually problem. I have a new set of injector rubbers to install - maybe this is the problem. |

Heat / pressure problem perhaps if it occurs after five minutes or so??

Oh, I am getting a full system next week and am just waiting for the extractors. I did not plan to buy a cat that would be used for 2 weeks and then thrown out (getting bigger diameter hi flow with system).

What you mean by heat and pressure problems?

Map sensor?
Also to test for leaks you drop a small amount of oil onto the place you think you have a leak and see if it gets sucked in when revving the car.

Map sensor is the thing size of a cig packet screwed to the firewall, has a vaccum hose and wires running to it, borrow one just plug it on doesnt have to be upright or screwed to the firewall and see if it makes a difference

What doe this thing do? Is it a common fault? How much you reckon a wrecker would sell one for , or should i get one new?

Well the map sensors can give bad readings to the ECU and cause problems, it may not be your cause, thats why i say borrow one if possible from a known working car, i think they are $75 new (but dont qoute me)

im having similar problems to you too. Idles like its missing but when im driving it seems fine. I have replaced plugs, leads, coil, cleaned isc, got a K&N, XR8 snorkle and it still does it. Last night was mucking around with the engine and i noticed some oil around the front of the engine and around the 1st cylinder there the rocker cover connects to the head. I degreased that area of the engine 2 months ago and its filthy and i can see clean oil that i just out in along there also. I checked the rocker cover and its tight as. Do i need to replace the gasket maybe?? the engine has plenty of compression as it was tested before i put lgp in it and it was perfect. The car is an EF Fairmont.
Any help would be greatly apprieciated as this has got me F$^KED!!! |

I suppose as suggested it could be MAP related.. hell it could even be something like the HEGO on the exhaust sending back the wrong info to the ECU.
What's your engine temperature like? Is it normal or is it running a bit too warm?

Temp is around the a and m on NORMAL. I drove through kangaroo valley last weekend (very hilly road) and the temp got up to R but thats normal for that road i guess.
it does hang around the m now most of the time and when i bought it (oct 2004) it was around the a I guess im more worried about the oil leaking from the rocker cover |

Always I generally sit on or around the A or M. Either HOT or Cold outside Temps as well.
