Hey guys, I've always been avoiding ef's but I gave in and bought an ef fairmont ghia now having second thoughts...
Anyway this is the issue's before and after i put new head and timing chain on.
When ever I start it sometimes it revs up and sits on about 3G then slowly comes down and idles like it has a nice lumpy cam then smothes out and doesn't know where it wants to idle (you can hear the idle controller opening and closing with the intake piping off *hisssss* when it opens and revs up by its self). It also has absolutely no go/power (i did get to rip a skid in the shed after i finished putting head on then it went back to no power) if ya have it in park or nutral and jump on the accelerator it seems like it takes half hour to rev out. When ya take it for a drive it seems like its missing or struggling until ya reach about 80kmph keeping the revs high there on it goes great to speed limit 180.
Timings not out, coil pack replaced, plugs, leads, fuel filter, fuel pump fine, tps correct voltage, hego sensor voltage in range, idle control seems to be in voltage + resistance...
My last thought is ecu?
It also won't let me do a diagnostic test on it I've correctly hooked it up. The test light wont light up or flash codes with ignition on (I've tested light it works) it does all the normal klicking noises and stuff when the key is turned on for diagnostics but the thermos don't do that little whoosh like usual when going in to diagnostic mode.

Coupla thoughts:
- After taking it for low-speed run to normal operating temp (ie, while it is acting up), read the plugs for any clues.
- Possible culprit is a big vacuum leak or maybe a vacuum hose still disconnected after replacing the head. Spray brake cleaner liberally along every cm of the gasket joins between the throttle body and the head, and along all vacuum lines; a leak will show up as an increase in revs.
- Is your new head sealed properly to the block? Any evidence of leaks: losing coolant, oil or combustion gas in coolant, coolant in oil, etc?

Weird that it works fine above 80 km/h right to top end, so not likely fuel, spark or catalyst.

Cheers for the tips.
I've used a full can of brake clean defiantly no vacuum leaks.
It's starting to really play up and miss under any load now eg standing on the brake and pushing accelerator it coughs f@rt and s***s it's self like its missing crazy. I retested coil pack and leads with multimeter resistance seems fine on all.
I did take the cmp cam pos sensor out and wiped it and chucked it back in and it ran sweet for a couple of secs again. So I have the cam and crank sensor on way.

I'll check timing again after work. I triple checked it before I put it back together and it was dead on.

Did you set the engine to TDC and fitted the 4mm pin in the Cam Sensor Body before refitting the Cam Sensor?

Nah I diddnt take the whole shaft and everything out, just the little sensor on top with the two 7/32" bolts which the plug plugs into and wiped the magnet. It made it run good for a few secs then back to rough.

Have you checked the MAP sensor?

Do you have a spare?

Check the map sensor hose as well.

What about the intake air temp sensor?

Does it blow any smoke, black/Blue/White?

Finally a little break through!
Was able to pull some codes from ecu.
116 ECT sensor (coolant temp sensor)
214 CMP sensor fault (cam position sensor)
Now to play the waiting game till goodies arrive in mail...

Cam pos sensor and crank angle sensor diddnt fix the problem. Will a faulty coolant temp sensor make it run real bad with no go?

After changing coil pack leads and a couple more sensors again with no change I finally found the problem. Who ever put the new fuel pump in, being one of those shorter after market ones that has that little extra fuel hose on it to make up for the size of the pump they diddnt put hose clamps on each end of the hose so it was pretty much spraying fuel around in the tank and just getting enough to the injectors to run like crap......nice.
