I have an issue with my EF Thermo's on my fairmont.
They work great for about 15-20 mins, then they revert back to the 1st stage, and the car overheats.
Even when you click the aircon, they go flat out, and then slow down to stage one...
If i stop the car, or park it, for about 10 mins, when you jump back in the car, they work for about 5 mins, and stop again.

I have swapped the relays around under the bonnet near the airbox, and that didnt make any difference, although one of the 5pin blue ones, and one of the 4 pin grey ones were hot as. nearly unable to touch hot..

I know these fans are controled by the ECU, and that the fan motors play up too, but what should i replace first??

get new relays, the contacts in them are stuffed, had the same thing with the missis car..

ok, i've been to repco, and unloaded some dollars..
Now, the first thing that i noticed is, the 5 pin blue ford ones dont have a resistos across the 85-86 pins for the relay, and the repco ones do.. is that a problem?? should i crack open the new ones and cut them off?? or just get ford ones tomorrow?
How ever, now the fans click over to stage 2, and when the temp gets to 'M' they go flat out and pull it back to 'L'...
But, i was under the impression that when the A/C is on the fans should be on flat-out the whole time.. and mine go flat out for about 1 min, and turn off (well, back to a low stage)...

is that the way its meant to be?? the temp gets to 'M' then the fans pull it back, and then it slowly creeps back up there...

Just started the fairmont with the a/c set at 21degrees, the fans operated at high speed for 1-2min than dropped back to low speed. I know they will run flat out all the time when the a/c is set to 16 degrees cold on auto control.

I had a problem about 1month ago when the passenger side fan stopped working. I traced it back to 1 of those white 12V 40A relays. I had a spare NARVA 40A relay in the shed so i swapped them out, and yeah all working good.

It's easy to test relays, you just need a multimeter and make up some jumper leads to go from the relay to the battery. Crimp spade(female) on one end and small aligator clips on the other.

When you apply 12v battery to pin86, earth to pin85 you should have continuity between pin30 and pin87.

When relay disconnected from battery you should have continuity between pin85 & pin86 and a open cct between pin30 & pin87.

The 5pin relays should have continuity between 85&86 and 30&87a when disconnect. Apply battery to 86 and earth 85 you should get continuity between pin 30 & 87 and open circuit between 30 & 87a.

Hmm... that is interesting, because mine turned off when the climate panel was on 16C..
I think i'll get some ford 5pin relays, because im not sure about the inbuilt resistor in the narva ones..
Next thing, i'll hook up a test light to the ECU and make sure it is commanding the fans..

The inbuilt resistor is for voltage spike protection. So it will not harm or effect the operation. Did you get the right type of 5pin relay. you should have got the one for power change over.

why dont you start again i would sugest you use the davies craig wiring set up and start again if you have more problems or atleast use the el setup. if you use the davies craig setup make sure you wire them up as twin fan thermo and single fan condenser.

email davies craig for more information tell them its a ef ford and you want to know what wiring diagrams best.

no garuntees but see how you go and let us know how you went

It doesnt overheat anymore, so i'll see how it goes..
