The thermo fans on my EF are not working, causing the car to overheat etc. I've recently converted the car to manual, and so I can't do the Key On Engine Off Diagnosis to test run the fans as the ECU doesn't seem to know when the car is in a gear or not. Any ideas how else to go about fault finding the problem with the fans? Since neither works I assume it must be something that effects the pair of them.

Did you put the resistors on the automatic gearbox loom?

Hey mate,
When my EF was converted to a manual the thermos wouldnt turn off, they ran constantly. Then i bought an XR6 manual ECu off ebay, and they ran as they should after that. My guess is that you may have blown the thermo fan fuse, or they may be unplugged???

I'd try and unplug the loom with the resitors on, the fans should be on full speed all the time. If they work that should rule out that there isn't something wrong with the fans.

It seems to be the wiring you've done for the thermos. Honestly, the best thing is to just get a J3 chip and flash an XR6 Manual on it and you'll be sweet; they don't cost that much. If you know anything about relays, you can test the 3 (EL) or 4 (EF) of them individually. However if the thermos were ok before you did the swap, it's highly unlikely that it would be them.

Leads to issues in that I'm currently running a ChipTorque chip tuned for my current Tickford XR6 automatic ECU for the supercharger setup. So I would have to then tune up the J3 chip for the supercharger... |

Does the chiptorque use the J3 port? If not, the J3 should still be fine with the same ECU as yours flashed in it. Just edit the transmission type constant to manual.

You didnt pull the auto fuse out of the fuse panel did you? Because I think for some strange reason it effects the thermos also.

Is there more than one plug on the ECU? The ChipTorque plugs onto the bottom of the ECU, you remove a plastic pannel piece and it goes on there. I would imagine that it is likely to be the same port. The ChipTorque is made tuned for a specific ECU code. |

I just tried with the auto fuse out and the resistor loom unplugged and they still didn't run. I am going to now start testing and checking the wiring, as I have rewired some of the car with Fairlane looms when changing the motor and gearbox.

I'm currently looking at going down the J3 route, it would seem that we might be able to read the Chip Torque tune, put that on a J3 chip along with the manual ECU stuff, and then if I get the Full House Package I should be able to do the adjustments etc. myself. |

If you unbolt the relay block you should be able to see the little skinny wires in the bottom of it... The red to each relay is the power... probe with a test lamp with car "on"... you should see power there... The other side of the coil runs back to the computer where it grounds them out to bring on the relays...And on EL you only have two trigger wires one is blue and the other blue/white... you will have three though being EF... you need to find wires of the same colour in the computer plug (Unplug the computer and make sure car is off... plug a multimeter probe in the spade connector in the relay block and check for the same colour wire in the computer plug... set it on beep mode...
If you pass these tests you have power, and you have circuit to the computer to turn them on... Next step you can try is to run the diagnostic test again, use a computer safe test light and probe each of the three fan wires coming out of the computer if you see one or more earth out the computer is working... If not the computer is definitely the thing having the issue... can you get your hands on a manual ECU just to try and see if the problem is eradicated? Cheers, Tim
