my bro in-law has a 95 ef gli wagon, all stock.
the trouble is on most mornings it won't start,,when it does it goes ok all day,,but when its been sitting over night it won't start again. fuel pump is new, leads are ok and plugs are ok. the only thing not cheched is the coil pack. what you think,,i think it is one of the coil packs playing up.

It will be smartlock playing up. Fairly common to happen. If it were coils then it would be a more intermittent misfire problem rather than a no start some days. Get a new one from the wreckers, just make sure it is the same colour. Red, blue and green I think for the different models. If you have a gli, get a gli one, if futura, get futura, etc.
cheers Scott

That is smartlock. It cuts ignition.

So how would one test if that is the problem before changing a coil. Grab a BEM and wait 30min with key in the try to start? I had the same problem about 3 years ago but the only difference between naughty and me is that i cleaned my engine with high pressure water and shortly after it fired but then chugged alot then nothing, just turning over and zip. Im thinking with the amount of water thats fallen in NSW recently but not knowing if its in Naughty's area and assuming that naughty has no idea if the coil has been replaced in the last 10 years i would almost 99% say its a coil that has a hairline crack and water has seeped in causing it to fail over a couple of days or its simple condensation on the coil pack.

A coil will start failing when hot. The heat opens up the cracks and causes failure. When cold a dud coil will work fine. Apply heat and they stuff up. If it was the coil then it would start as an intermittent failure when hot, gradually getting worse. It would reach a point when the internal resistance is too high and finally quit.
A smartlock failure will be running fine one moment then......silence. It may start straight back up or it may not. Eventually this will result in a no start when the smartlock circuits fail completely. Basically if the car runs fine but fails to start sometimes - smartlock is the most likely cause. If it runs rough for a while, then fails to start - it is more likely to be ignition related. Coil most likely but I have had the crank angle sensor give irregular spark, also a leaking intake gasket on #6 has caused a similar feeling problem (lean burn). cheers Scott

try bumping your dash where the bem sits sometimes they just have a loose connection if it starts after that you have your fault if not no harm done,i had same problem it was smartlock/bem so i took it ot cleaned it and soldered a few connections a bit better,i havent had the problem since.

well the mechanic got it started,,it was a loose wire in the cam sensor where a dizzy would normally be..

I thought that would only effect the fueling. Live and learn.

it tells the ecu where number one cylinder is so it knows when to fire the spark.

Which is irrelevant because it is wasted spark. The crank angle sensor tells the ECU when you are at TDC on number 1 but because plugs 1 and 6 fire at the same time it is irrelevant whether number 1 is on compression or exhaust. It must throw a big enough code to stop the engine running or something else was amiss and the mechanic either failed to tell you, fixed it by accident or is still there hiding somewhere.
cheers Scott
