I was about to buy a set of 115lb springs when I was going to install a 1521a but then decided I'll keep the 977b in. ,
There were 3 springs to choose from, can't remember the part number so I'll call them 1,2,3 1 - xr spec 2 155lb 3 double spring I think was 130 lb I reckon 115 will be good for a 977b, I think I need some, Does anyone know what noises are made when the valve springs arent up to a 977b or larger cam.

Ummm. Usually valve bounce is a pretty big sign. Remember that that 115lb rating will drop to around 100-105lb after some use. Its probably safer going for the 130lb as they will lose some strength as well, probably end up around 120lb. There was another thread on here where they said youre better off running heavier springs as the power loss from heavier springs is so minimal compared to getting valve bounce or damaging the valvetrain.
Cheers Sam

So u are running crow double valve springs with 977b.
How is it? Did u need the head machined to fit the doubles ?

Ive only got a 1673 and im getting valve bounce with stock xr springs. Definately going to go to the doubles and probably the 1521a as well. As far as i know they are a direct replacement for the stock ones.

I'll be looking into getting doubles soon,
I have a brand new 1521a regrind, havnt even opened it yet, I was going 1521a with a Cms 3 head then I was gonna get a Cms 3 cam to suit head. Then i pulled 157 rwkw with 977b and full exhaust , I was very happy and decided to leave it, if Ur interested in the 1521a let me know Corey

Im gonna need some serious headwork before going to the 1521 to get the full potential out of it. But yeah i am interested to a point. I've got another xr cam laying around here somewhere if you still want a spare cam?

I won't need a spare as I have my old cam,
That's why I didn't go down the path of the 1521a. The Cms 3 head was $2000 I think , I have a turbo kit 80% complete and for $2000 I would have it tuned and running.

crow springs are 90lbs installed height and standard xr springs are not 100lbs there is no actual recorded reading but they are around 80lbs.
im running the crow xr equivalent springs and they are alot better than my old ef xr6 springs. maybe consider how long those springs have been in your car as new is always better and fresher than old.. |

and double valve springs can still fail aswell, as i had snapped one a couple of years ago..
And that broke on the way to work just cruising, car only got to 3000rpm when it let go.. So remember NO valve springs are fail safe.. but bigger will help out..

Are doubles to heavy for a 977b or would new xr springs be enough

a 977b can still be used on std springs.. but a 250,000 od km motor will probably have some pretty soft springs after 15 years...lol
i figgure if your going to the trouble of changing the springs you might aswell use the best ones available, atleast then if you decide to go bigger later you wont need to upgrade them again... |

if you dont fit the correct spring for the cam, it can cause excessive wear on the valve train.
i think doubles are overkill for the 977b........... but for the 1521a are more suited |

standard springs are fine for 977b but after a few year they go softer so i just replaced mine with the crow cam xr6 equiv and all is good
