I don't know if this really adds anything. But I think on the EL's auto, they were able to have the torque converter lock up much earlier. My sisters locks up at 55kmh.
But I have also noticed that my sisters EL, and my step dads old one used to go a little more effortlessly than my EF.

A fairmont's going to be slightly heavier than a low end falcon (GLi/Futura).

a 96 engine is probaly in worse condition than a 98 engine.

The 98 EL may be a 'Hybrid' ie. it has an AU head/rocker gear so they rev better than regular EF/ELs.

There's suspension changes in the ELs (esp the rear end).

ELs did get a revised version of the auto box, so maybe it's better too.

Lots of small changes - but officially EF and ELs had teh same performance figures.

EF and ELs should be side buy side in a race providing ones not thrashed and both have same tranny, raced my cousins EL in my EF both stock and we stayed side by side. but those hybrid ELs go good.

haven't seen those figures. Keep in mind a Futura will be heavier than a GLi.

Figures for engine power and torque are the same.

you will probably find that the EL futura has the 3.23 gear set in the diff rather than the 3.08 which the EF does. Notice that the EF gets higher speeds in each gear? 1st: 88 (EF) VS 82 (EL) so on and so forth. Might account for the higher QM times.

EL's have 3.08 diffs too. (XR's and V8's excluded)

It'd all be ECU changes for the different shift points.
