HELP! my ef xr6 is running on 5 cyclinders. I have just replaced the plugs and leads hoping to fix the problem but no luck. Then i tried pulling off each lead one by one to see the effect. I noticed no effect when i pulled the lead off the 6th cylinder. Does this mean the problem is with the injector?
Any suggestions? Has anyone else had similar problem that they have fixed? |

could be a number of things, maybe try a compression test, or can swap injectors and leads to see if the problem is related to them.

I have checked each lead and there is definately spark at each one. I will try changing the injectors around. THis is not a big or difficult job is it? How do i clean the injectors once i have them out?

unplug the electrical connector on the suspect injector and see if it idles any different. If nothing changes then it is either the injector itself or the wiring. See if you are getting a voltage when the injector should be pulsing. If you have a good voltage on the connector it is most probably the injector. You could also have a dodgey spark plug.
I hope this helps you out. |

Did this problem only start after you changed the plugs and leads?

No - i changed the plugs and leads to try and fix the problem - it had no effect and that is why i think it might be the fuel side of things. I tried unpluggin each lead to see the effect. The 6th cylinder had no effect when unplugged and therefore i think something is going on in this cylinder. I am hoping it is the injector and not anything more serious. It is very noticeable at idle but not to bad when revving although power is down a bit. At idle i can clearly hear it is running on 5cyl.

Swap the sixth injector for another one if the problem moves to the cylinder you put the sixth injector then its likely the injector is either faulty or dirty If after doing that the sixth cylinder is still not firing at idle do a compression test (wet & dry) across all cylinders. If compression is down on no 6 then a leaking valve or broken ring is likely.

Sounds identical to when I had a snapped valve spring

Last night i tried unplugging the power to the injector. When unplugged it made no difference - ie engine runs the same with injector not working. I did not have time to swap the injector with another one to check but i will try this tonight.
The problem only seems to happen at idle. When the car is revving it is not noticable at all. Surely if it was the injector it would run like crap all the time and not just at idle? I will try the injector swap tonight and let you know the results. |

sounds like my car atm. I have a burnt valve
apparently it compensates when revving and that is why u dont notice it

A burnt valve! Does that mean pulling the head off? Sounds like a good opportunity for a port and polish and a new cam.
Who in WA is the best people to see for some mild head work? Car is ef xr6 that is everyday car. i dont want to go crazy with it but would not mind a mild improvement. I am getting a compression test done tomorrow so this should let me know if it the burnt valve or not. |

no 6 is the hottest running cyl, could be a dead plug or something like a valve. not coool

WOuld this effect the temperature. I have noticed that the car is sometimes getting higher on the temp gauge than it used to. Not huge but noticeable - i suspect burnt out valve. Sounds expensive.

the valve itself isnt that expensive, just getting the valve out is a pain in the a**
check everything else first tho
