I'm thinking its the ignition leads as I've had this happen to two cars we've had.
Seems to be getting worse so the wife says shes been driving it. I'm taking it to work today and see how bad it is. I'm thinking spark plug change and ignition lead change. Failing that might be the coil pack. Dont think its missing but I'm not sure. Let you guys know more this afternoon when I get back. Cheers |

Sounds like coil pack to me - although it was replaced (and new leads) about 18 months ago from memory. surely the coil pack lasts longer than that?

Could be your ignition leads, as they do f**k up. They only way to check them is with an ohm meter. They should be about 7000 ohms per foot. The coil packs very rarely fail.

Seems to be running alright now.
It was sluggish and the fuel economy is up the s**t. It was hunting idle and kind of had a flat spot. I think the wife was driving like miss daisy and it carboned up. I gave it a bit this morning on the way to work and still wasnt that great but after I got home it is better. I think I'll change the spark plugs and the leads because they are the motorcraft ones I'll get some you beaut leads for it. How hard is it to access the leads on the coil pack? I cant get my hand down there. Cheers Timmeh |

if you take the air box out, top and bottom, you can get your arm in there

If you can get the car up on ramps or jack it up you will have access from the bottom of the car to get to the coil

I've ruled out a bad batch of fuel. Filled up at a popular BP with ultimate 98 and added Nulon octane booster and its still hunting and lacks power.
I've ordered a new set of NGK ignition leads @ $64 for the set. Part number for those interested is RC-FDK809 for both GLI and XR6 EF application Hopefully tomorrow it will be back to normal. I'll keep you's up to date. Cheers Edited for correct part number. Last edited by Timmeh on Fri Jan 07, 2005 11:47 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

I've changed the spark plugs and ignition leads and it has smoothed it out but its still a bit rough special at idle.
Now I'm thinking coil pack, fuel filter or injectors. I need this diagnosed so its not gonna cost and arm and a leg at a mechanics I'd rather tell them the problem so it works out cheaper. Cheers PS please help!!! |

If I were you, before spending all this money at the mechanics I would first do some maintenance... apart from leads and sparks - distributor cap (if you got one, Im pretty sure you do), air filter (unless you have K&N, BMC, etc clean them just in case), also clean your injectors professionally might cost a bit, but definately worth it, fuel filter, and after that try reseting your ECU. after all that if there's something still wrong, I would change the coil pack.
With the above mentioned things, if they don't help, you still have a much better running car. Good luck

No the EFs dont have a distributor, I already have a K&N filter.
I'll change the fuel filter and see what happens then I'll see how much cleaning injectors is worth. Thanks justfordima |
