I took the car to Ford who fixed a few things at an outrageous price.
I had idle and flat spot problem and they said they fixed it with an iduction clean (just throttle body and idle speed controller) it was alright for about a week but now its worse. Idle is jumping around 500rpm and the flat spot nearly makes me head butt the dash. I'm thinking fuel pressure regulator, injectors or fuel pump. Is there somewhere I could go in Perth that will have the answer without going to a Ford dealership? awaiting recommendations. Cheers |

Flat spot happens up to about 2500rpm after that its like a turbo has kicked in and its at its normal power.
Its not as bad when its warmed up but it still happens. Idle fluctuates worse when warmed up when the auto choke is off. When its cold and just started and idling at 1000rpm its almost normal but when its warmed up and idling its all over the place. It should sit on about 650-700rpm but it goes from 400 up to 900 rpm when warmed up. Ford have done an iduction clean on it and previous to that I cleaned the idle speed controller. I've check vacuum lines to the best of my ability and nothing seems to be leaking. After Ford did there induction clean it was better but not perfectly normal like it used to be. Cheers |

how long has the fuel filter been on the car? more then 15000km?
have you ever had the injectors cleaned? or an on car injector/carbon clean? the flat spot seems to be a fuel issue. injectors and carbon build up could also explain the idle problems. the onboard injector carbon cleans are really quite a good thing and they do clean out alot of carbon. I've removed cyl heads after a carbon clean and found the tops of the piston shinny and no signs of carbon build up at all. i would get that done and get a new fuel filter regardless of the age of the one on the car |

OK Cheers. I'll do that and see what happens.
I'll look at the nulon one first. I'll chuck in the full 500ml (recommended for three tanks) in one tank. Fuel filter should be easy enough to change. You have to depressurise the system first dont you? |

What happens if you don't depressurize the system guys? Reduce the fuel system pressure as follows: (a) Open the boot, remove fuel pump access cover. (b) Unplug fuel pump wiring connector. (c) Start engine allow to idle. When engine stalls operate stater motor for further 10 seconds. (d) Ensure ignition is off and connect wiring for fuel pump back up. (2) Raise the car and go to work on the filter. |

I had the same type of symptons that you're experiencing, I also was sure it was fuel related (either Injectors or Regulator - I had already done the filter)
Anyway at my last service, they found that it was the plug leads that were breaking down - fitted a new set and it's even cured my warm starting problems - car pulls like a freight train now. Hope it helps Paul B XR6WGN

I'm going to change the fuel filter and see if I cant get some of that Holdung Top Engine Cleaner. |
