Need a bit of help...
Just had to replace timing chain and to get the crankshaft pulley off. I have lost all timing and both workshop manuels I own are no help. I need to know where the cylinder positions are eg which piston needs to be at top dead center etc The camshaft timing is not an issue i know the timing mark needs to be level with the head and the crankshaft and dizzy need to be in line but not sure where the pistons are meant to be in their stokes

I am sure at TDC, piston one is at the top.

With the all the marks lined up, the only way the crank can sit is with number 1 at TDC.
It worries my when people go diving into this stuff and don't even have the smallest grasp of the basics. |

One would think you would find this stuff out before diving in head first.
But then again, go right ahead, there are alot of mechanics that make money out of fixing back yard bungles. |

That bottom end pic looks like it may be from a Hybrid or AU, which have drifferent timing marks than the EA to EL1 regular bottom ends. By the sounds of it you got it right in the end either way. And dont listen to tickford_6, he's forever got sand in his vag. |

What sort of manual have you got that doesnt explain cam timing? Or are you trying to use the one in the glovebox that came with the car? Dont worry if you get the cam timing wrong, what's the worst that could happen? Just a few valves and pistons having a smooch.

If you're only out by a link or two on the chain you wont damage anything, it just wont run too well or at all.
