I've got a noisy idle, I dont think its the power steering pump but just wondering which of the idler pulley bearings commonly fail causing a rumbling noise at idle/when revving it.
I've spun them both by hand and they both feel perfect, no endplay or a*** rotation on either.... Is there a common one that gets worse over time or am I just lucky? How much are they, if cheap i'll just replace them both... |

don't know how much the part is, but the labour isn't that cheap, (unless you do it yourself of course.)
The bearings usually sound like a squeaky water pump when they go, (not a rumble) |

have the same prob as u thought it was the idler pulleys, abt $25-$30 from ford each, so replaced them were pretty worn, now it turns out it is the water pump that is making most of the noise getting one tmmrow and putting that in.abt $150

Labour is free, sif i'd let any grease monkey touch my car, even a Ford. I like to do things right, thats why I do them myself
Water pumps are $70 from MoParts in croydon Repco has them for $80 Dont pay more than that. So there isn't a common fault eh... I'll just deal with it till the bastard dies... |

I dunno bozz.... I had the tensioner pulley let go on mine (same as an I6 i think)... bearing siezed and proceeded to melt plastic pulley.... belt came off. Also got a couple of noisy idlers.... more embarassing than anything else. Not expensive to replaced, im just lazy.

BTW your description of squeaky is more accurate, they're squeaking a bit...
Might give them a shot of wd40 and see if it changes its note, that way i'll know which (or all) are on their way out... |

the best price i could get was $105 with pulley on, $60 without pulley and considering u need a special tool to get the pulley off and another to put it on.
mate works at ford assembly plant, he'll get it for me with discount, the price i put up was rrp. don't leave the idler pulley noisey, the bearing siezes and it snaps apart, as said before, happened on the au not pretty scraping molten plastic off the head and block and under hood

If it is the water pump, always get a genuine.
I havent found an aftermarket (repco, bursons, etc) that keep the car as cool under the same circumstances. Aftermarkets generally have less fins, if not less, smaller fins. Spend the extra $$$ and get a good one. I know I'll be replacing my aftermarket with a genuine one when I get my act together. Doesnt do as good a job. Also spray the belt with some WD40. Sometimes when they get dry, it sounds like a bearing noise. Had me fooled once for a few days.. |
