Hey Guys/Girls, I have a 98 EL wagon.Its got 300+ klms on the speddo.The engine and trans are tidy and always serviced. The problem im having is its losing water and at times it runs hot.It has no water in the oil or vice versa. I had it Co2 tested and come back all clear. It goes very well and does not miss a beat. No water or vapour coming out the exhaust. At times it runs very hot but generally runs on a or l. It does not leak any water on the driveway. I was hoping someone would have some suggestions on what i could check next? Thanks in advance

I'd have a good look at the thermostat and operation of the thermofans mate. Do the fans work?

It has a brand new water pump and themostat.thermos seem to work.hard to tell if they are working properly though

Make sure it's full of water and warm it up. It helps if you have a infer red thermomotor. As the engine warms up, one hose should stay cold as the other hose warms up (Can't remember if it's top hose or bottom hose which warms up first). When the thermostat starts to open, the cold hose should begin to warm up too. Eventually, when the thermostat is fully opened both hoses should be the same temperature roughly. This indicates the thermostat is working properly. Whilst this is all happening, keep an eye on the temp gauge. Soon after the thermostat has opened, the thermofans should begin to cycle. If not you've got a problem.
I forgot the mention. It may pay to pull the radiator out and get it serviced. Falcons have a habit of clogging up. Same with Surbaru's. Poor circulation causes falcons to overheat.

Look down the side of the block, It's probably leaking there!

I have looked all around the block and there is no residue at all on it. It loses to much water to be just evaporating i think. The blocked radiator sounds like a good thing to check.I think i might just replace that and see how i go. Hope it fixes it so my head ache can go away..

Update on whats going on. I went for a drive to sydney yesterday.On the highway it sat on L or a touch under the whole way down the highway but as soon as we hit traffic in goes up to the O. It has me stumped

If the thermofans are working properly, definitely a blocked radiator. If you take it out, take note how heavy it feels before and after it's serviced. You will notice it's alot lighter after. Also have a good look in front of the radiator. Check for leaves and s**t between the radiator and A/C condensor. Another reason they overheat. i.e poor airflow.

The thermos seem very strange.they seem to turn off and on alot.If the car is hot (up to the "O") shouldnt the fans stay on?? They run for about 20 seconds then stop for a few minutes then back on again and so on..
