If you go au pistons you need au rods
the main bearings on the AU are a different size as well

Whats the build date and have you got an alloy (cast) sump or steel one?
Also read the sticky's on different engines at start of this forum.

I thought you could use AU pistons in an EL engine, as long as the gudgeon pin sizes are the same, deck heights are the same.?????

pin size is the same, deck height is the same, but rod length/pin height is different. AU pistons will sit .120" lower in the bores on EL rods.

I meant deck height of the pistons, pin to top of piston distance......are they the same????

nope
E-series use a 5.88" rod, AU onwards use a 6" rod with higher pins.

I now have the correct rods for the pistons I'm using. They are AUII rods, brand new, and have cleaned them up a bit.
