Hi Guys, I have an EL Fairmont with a 4 Litre and it appears to be a bit heavy on fuel, I noticed yesterday that the exhaust is a bit sooty which to me would indicate it is running rich. It is running fine apart from that.
My question is, what could be the cause or causes for this?. Could it be the Oxygen sensor or could it be a combination of things?. I have only got it on the road recently so I do not know its history prior. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou, Dave. |

replace all the vac lines and most likely the oxy.
then do an overhaul on it (leads, plugs, etc)

would it be better to go to fords and get them or somewhere where it wont cost as much?

Thanks for the replys guys, After two tanks of fuel thru it the range is about 315-320 kms a tank city driving which seems a bit heavy to me. And its not foot to the floor driving either just normal casual acceleration.
There appears to be no noticable vacuum leaks and it runs fine. The only thing it does is runs a bit rough on a hot start for a split second and smooths out. What ideas do you Guys have?. Thanks, Dave. |

Thanks, Dave. hmm, you should be getting about 400k's to a tank with purly city driving, one thing alot of people never check are tyre pressures, standard pressure should be around 36-38psi, but i keep mine pumped to 45psi to get the extra k's, but just be VERY carfull in the wet if you going to have them that high.

I would definatly change oxygen sensor. It made a 15% reduction in consumption for me. A good tune and maybe new plugs/leads.

Well your tyres are f**k then, its true that tyres with higher pressure are better in the wet. Traction, as referred to, is directly correlated with the weight on the tyre itself, that is the cars weight. Of course a softer compound tyre will make a difference, also a larger outer diameter tyre allows you to run a softer tyre compound with similar wear trends as a firmer one as the percentage of tyre not in contact with the road : tyre that is in contact with the road (flexing, deformation), is higher. This ratio just means that the tyre has more time to cool before it comes in contact with the road and its deformed again.
