Hi,

I have a '96 EL Falcon wagon i bought 2nd hand a few years ago.
I always thought it had something wrong with it as it never realy had any guts/power.
Especially on hills. Even small ones.
Eg. When i hit a small hill, If i put my foot flat to the floor, and hit the hill doing 80,
Buy the time i'm half way up the hill, the engine is still reving, but the speed had dropped to around 50-40 and just kept going down.

Now the car has been off the road for a few months, it has nothing in it it all.
Sometimes it revs high but still no guts.
Other times, with accel flat to the floor, it wont rev as high as it should.
But either way, someone can stand in front of the car, and pretend to be superman and stop it from moving just by pushing it with their hands. And no matter how much you rev, the wanna be super man will win and stop the car from moving forward.

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.

I have been a member of this forum for over a year, but cannot remember what email address i registered with, so i setup this account to use from now on.

Thanks

sounds like the transmission is slipping something fierce!

might pay to give it a good service.

just a thought, could be the throttle cable. check to see if the throttle body is opening up fully when the pedal is flat to the floor

Thanks for the quick reply alfy.

I did have it serviced around 6 months before i took it off the road and the auto done too.
The guy who did it just said he reccomends a full reconditioning for $1200.
But would not tell me why or what was wrong.

Is it hard to reco these things ?
Is it hard to just change the gearbox over for another ?

Thanks.

Hi jerrytorry,
I thought of that, but figured that since sometimes the revs are good but the power just isn't there to match them that maybe it wasn't that.

Troy,
Yeah, i will have too order one.
Just looking at it in a book doesn't realy give you as good an idea as to how hard it is compared to someone who has done it before.
:)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Thanks for the reply everyone.

The 96 EL Falcon's dont have a dipstick for the transmission fluid.
So there is no way i can test it unless i undo the bolt on the side of the gearbox.
If fluid leaks out (which it does), then i assume its got enough fluid.

Unless someone knows a better way to check ?

Thanks.

yea it does have to be, so there is fluid all threw the system.
take it to a good mechanic and get them to have a look at it.

Hi,

I thanks for the replies.

I dont know how to check it myself if the car needs to be running then.

Was trying to avoid mechanic to save money for any needed parts.

But sounds like might need some serious work on gearbox.

:(
