I was under the impression they too had a 3.08 diff (not sure about S Pacs etc) but it was the gearing in the auto that is vastly different. Hence the TH700??? in a Falcon would haul off the line, I'm not sure how it would affect anything else ie. revs on the FWY, top end etc. BTW, my auto ED with cat back and 1004-114 cam could keep up to my mate's 5 speed VS Clubby with exhaust (not sure if there is any other performance mods) until 130 and then he'd pull away. We were both surprised and stoked!! Just can't wait until I get a T5, 3.7s, headwork, headers and all the rest LOL!! |

Yeah both commodore and falcon have 3.08 ratios at the rear end, and im pretty sure that all models had that ratio. its only the 1st gear and to a lesser extent the 2nd gear that's the difference. 3rd and 4th are similar between the 2. the VS's were quicker than the VT's because the VT's were at least 100kg's heavier, yet retained the same engine/driveline.
I've driven my sisters VS a couple of times, they do go well off the line, but as already said, they start running out of oomph after 80-100 km/h

i raced my mate in his vt berlina series 2, i have ef fairmont. i kicked his a*** wildly. as we were draggingwe both started off with ours in second gear (autos, der) we took off his car shifted into second very quickly, iu was still in first as he was in second, i was a car length in front of him and a little bit more, then as sonn as my car popped it self into second gear, say goodbye to the berlina, got him by approx 4-5 car lengths in the end, which my mate toild me as i was unable to see how far infront i was.

off the line yes, but even with their huge weight advantage (to my EL) I still beat them handily to 100.

3.45 diff gears are a gift from god, are they not data_mine?
Mind you, be careful on slippery roundabouts when you're still enjoying the improved takeoff...

I (used to) drive my mums EL GLi wagon, one of my mates has an EL fairmont and the other had an EL GLi sedan. Went sedan, wagon, fairmont in most races. Then the fairmont copped a sports exhaust n it's basically luck wheter the fairmont or the wagon wins now. The GLi sedan moved over for a VN commodore with extractors, sports exhaust, and cop computer. Cost $800 and would whoop the a*** out of most any car we came across. It was a piece of s**t, but it was quick due to overly short 1st gear. If we all raced from about 60, the wagon would actually win. It seems that moving backwards from VT to VN the cars actually get alot faster, mostly due to weight. NRMA reviews seem to agree.
