Ok well my parents EL futura's head gasket has now completely gone. I ended up being able to give the car another 1 year using chemiweld and silverseal. But anyway with the recent hot weather the gasket has gone again and now for good, no amount of silverseal or chemiweld will prolong the effects now. I even put in a 12psi system recovery cap to reduce engine pressure.

Anyway what im after is a bit of info on replacing the head gasket. Ive heard to go the AU head gasket? But what Im mainly after is the cost that it will cost to replace it. The car has done 220 000km

Really depends on what tools you have, if you have a torque wrench your pretty set along with a good half inch socket set to pull the head off, have the head machined to clean it up and put the au gasket back on is probably the most cost effective way if you do it yourself, otherwise if you have someone else do it for you it's usually around ~$600

You are looking at a couple of hundred to do it yourself the last time i did one the head bolts alone cost me $99, you may not need to have the head machined as long as you clean it up well and make sure it has no cracks in it wack it back on, its the head gasket thats gone not the head. Unless you cant repair the head gasket yourself and you are going to pay some one to do it, first consider putting a AU motor in it's a cheaper option and faster than repairing the head gasket you can pick a AU engine up for a few hundred dollars these days either way theirs heaps off info on both these subjects on this forum to help and plenty of people willing to help.

Cheers Alan

I did a head gasket for a mate once; it cost a fair bit of money to have the head reconditioned. For someone else with a blown gasket, I got a quote for a second hand motor with warranty and that ended up cheaper than doing the head gasket. Just a thought.

Au head gaskit is the best option, but not the cheapest. Head bolt set should be around $40. If the head isn't warped, you can get a VRS gaskit set & head bolts, get a mate & DIY it in a day, probably cost you about $300 to $400...

Cheers

ACL VRS gasket set and bolts available for $100+del on ebay.

It's not a hard thing to DIY, just make sure you follow the engineers manual and ensure that the head isn't warped.

Depends how stuffed the head is, a 220 000km old EL isn't going to be the best in the valve seat and valve guide area. I've seen heads cost over $700 just for repair work on the head, remove and refit the head and other parts was extra.

You could go a second hand engine but you have no idea of its service history or internal condition and you could be back in the same boat in 12 months time.

You can have a read through this thread or go straight to the 10th page and download the pdf file for information on a head gasket replacement.

It is pretty straight forward, just tedious...hardest part would be the chain tensioner if you have never touched that before.

Can't remember how much it cost me to do the head gasket on the engine, but it was a spare engine and I replaced some bits and pieces not related to the head gasket. But it would have been around $500ish for VRS kit (for everything besides the head gasket), AU head gasket, new head bolts, and getting the head checked, straightened and cleaned.

It is a great way to understand a little bit more about how s**t works in an engine :)

You can use an AU engine. But some changes need to be made. Sump needs to be cut to clear the K-frame. Ignition system needs to be changed from coil pack to dizzy and some other little things which I am not 100% sure on...so will leave that for someone more informed.

You can use the AU head, but you need to also use the AU running gear...as in the rocker assembly and camshaft. Can't mix and match AU running gear with E-series ones. So you'll need a complete head.

Have a chat to williamstown engine reconditioners. They will machine your head for $50 and can also pressure test it for another $50.

Head gasket+bolts kit cost around $85-$95
